Stem cells and stem cell therapy! Many believe that stem cell therapy may lie somewhere in the future. That is not the case, and I am living proof that stem cell therapies are already available. They are repairing hearts, rebuilding livers, assisting in the cure of cancer and a multitude of other diseases. Popular broadcast and print media led me to believe that stem cell therapy is a long way off, held back by presidential order and political factions. I am one of the lucky ones. I found my way into a stem cell clinical trial that repaired my badly damaged heart and restored my life after I had come too close to death for comfort. There were only 24 of us in the Phase I stem cell clinical trial. We had all come for the same purpose; to ease the frightening pain in our chests and to try to stay alive. We were just a few of the tens of millions of people with similar problems who would ultimately benefit if the therapy under test proved to be successful. All 24 patients were very lucky to be selected for the pioneering stem cell clinical trial. In current medical practice, patients with such severe heart disease suffer episodes of severe heart pain (angina) and die slow deaths from congestive heart failure, their lungs filling with blood that their weakened hearts could not pump out to their bodies. We no longer face this grim prospect because of the amazing capabilities of stem cells. Uniquely, they can multiply themselves into large numbers and change themselves into any type of cells needed by the body, including brain cells, muscle tissue, and liver and kidney tissue.

In an incubated petri dish in a Boston laboratory, a cluster of eight living cells holds the key to a daring new era of medical science. These cells come from a human embryo, containing genetic material from my wife, Paulina, and me, obtained through in vitro fertilization (IVF). Research using these cells holds enormous potential to cure a fatal disease, saving the lives of countless children and relieving their families of unspeakable pain. We lived that pain ourselves. When our son was born we didn't know what a tortuous road stretched ahead of us- how our baby would suffer, and how we'd suffer with him. We didn't know he'd spend nearly 1,000 days in seven different hospitals, see more than 300 doctors and swerve close do death many times. We didn't know we'd have to take matters into our own hands to find the medical miracle that would save him. Nine years ago, Paulina and I embarked on a desperate quest. We needed to create a baby with the right genetic profile, whose umbilical cord blood could save our 2-year-old son, Andy, dying from a rare genetic disease. The baby would also have to be free of the inherited disease killing our son. After three years and five IVF cycles, and with the critical intervention of a novel medical technology called pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), our daughter, Sofia, was born. Her cord blood stem cells, transplanted into her brother via blood transfusion, replaced his faulty immune system and saved his life. Today we are blessed that Andy, 11, and Sofia, 6, are both healthy, beautiful children. In gratitude, Paulina and I donated the remaining frozen IVF embryos-the ones that could never be used because they carried the flawed gene causing the disease-to the Stem Cell Research Program at Children's Hospital Boston, where Andy's disease was diagnosed and cured. Scientists there were able to develop two new stem cell lines whose unique genetic properties will help researchers learn how Andy's disease, and many others, develop. From that knowledge will come treatments and cures. My wife and I know our story and its difficult moral choices is highly controversial. We've chosen to share it to give the issue a human face and voice-and to give hope to other families facing similar dilemmas.

For author Don C Reed, father of a paralyzed son, the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) is the greatest medical advance since penicillin.REVOLUTIONARY THERAPIES is Reed's third book about the $3 billion stem cell program.Voted into law in November 2004, CIRM is now running out of money.Should its funding be renewed? Thereby hangs a tale, or rather several dozen of them, for each of the book's 71 short chapters is framed by a yarn or vignette. The factual background is accurate, vetted by the scientists, but Reed's goal is clearly both entertainment and education.A favorite example is a little girl named Evie, imprisoned in a plastic bubble: her body's immune system did not work, and she would die outside. She joined a CIRM clinical trial ... Imagine how Evie's parents felt — when she got well. Some stories are comical, like 'How Stem Cell Research Saved My Car'; others surprising, like the comparison between politics and the giant crocodile Gustave; others are tragic or inspiring: but all point to this: More than 100 million Americans suffer chronic disease, causing mountains of medical debt — and the only way to reduce that expense ($3 trillion last year) — is cure.Related Link(s)

Stem Cells: An Insider's Guide is an exciting new book that takes readers inside the world of stem cells guided by international stem cell expert, Dr. Paul Knoepfler. Stem cells are catalyzing a revolution in medicine. The book also tackles the exciting and hotly debated area of stem cell treatments that are capturing the public's imagination. In the future they may also transform how we age and reproduce. However, there are serious risks and ethical challenges, too. The author's goal with this insider's guide is to give readers the information needed to distinguish between the ubiquitous hype and legitimate hope found throughout the stem cell world. The book answers the most common questions that people have about stem cells. Can stem cells help my family with a serious medical problem such as Alzheimer's, Multiple Sclerosis, or Autism? Are such treatments safe? Can stem cells make me look younger or even literally stay physically young? These questions and many more are answered here.A number of ethical issues related to stem cells that spark debates are discussed, including risky treatments, cloning and embryonic stem cells. The author breaks new ground in a number of ways such as by suggesting reforms to the FDA, providing a new theory of aging based on stem cells, and including a revolutionary Stem Cell Patient Bill of Rights. More generally, the book is your guide to where the stem cell field will be in the near future as well as a thoughtful perspective on how stem cell therapies will ultimately change your life and our world.
