Tarocchi sind die ältesten überlieferten, gemalten Spielkarten. Sie entstanden in der adeligen Gesellschaft Oberitaliens im 15. Jahrhundert und gehören zu der Spielkartenfamilie der Tarocke oder des späteren Tarot. Dieses Buch ermittelt anhand von in den Kartenmotiven dargestellten Wappen, Impresen oder Landschaftsausschnitten die Auftraggeber dieser Spielkarten. Mit diesem Vorgehen ergeben sich unerwartete Einblicke in die höfische Kultur ihrer Entstehungszeit und sehr enge Bezüge zu den Herzögen von Mailand. Gleichzeitig zeigt sich eine chronologische Abfolge der erhaltenen Spiele von Tarocchi. In der Analyse der ältesten bekannten Spielregeln dieses Kartenspiels zeigen sich darüber hinaus bemerkenswerte Analogien zur Gesellschaftsordnung des Adels jener Zeit. Die Autorin erschließt der Geschichtswissenschaft eine neue Quellengattung und erarbeitet eine transdisziplinäre Methode, die der kulturhistorischen Erforschung der Tarocchi und der Spielkartenforschung neue Aspekte hinzufügt.

The British Museum collection of Italian Renaissance ceramics is one of the most important and most comprehensive anywhere in the world.
