In unserem Verständnis impliziert "Entwicklung" den Übergang auf eine höhere Stufe, eine Entwicklung zum Besseren. Der Glaube an das Jenseits und ein verheißungsvolles Leben nach dem Tod verlor und verliert aber immer mehr an Einfluss - in der Vorstellung der meisten Menschen unseres Kulturkreises endet das Leben mit dem Tod. Deshalb erscheint es paradox, genau in dieser Phase, in der der Körper und oft auch der Geist abbaut, einen letzten Wachstumsprozess anzunehmen. Zwar ist sich der Mensch grundsätzlich und in abstrakter Weise seiner Endlichkeit bewusst - Testamente werden gemacht, Lebensversicherungen für die Hinterbliebenen abgeschlossen, ein Lebenstraum wird realisiert in Hinblick darauf, dass es irgendwann zu spät sein könnte. - Eine konkrete Beschäftigung mit dem Sterbeprozess erfolgt aber gewöhnlich erst durch äußere Auslöser z.B. Krankheit, Tod eines Angehörigen. Trifft einen Menschen die Diagnose des baldigen Todes im hohen Alter, empfindet er selbst und auch die Angehörigen dies meist als gerecht, vielleicht schon erwartet; die durchschnittliche Lebenserwartung liegt heute etwa bei 70 Jahren - es ist also wesentlich wahrscheinlicher, erst im dritten Lebensabschnitt zu sterben, als z.B. zu Anfang des letzten Jahrhunderts, als die Lebenserwartung bei etwa 44 Jahren lag. Der frühe Tod wird in unserer Zeit deshalb meist problematischer, weil unerwartet und ungerecht empfunden. So ist die Verarbeitung des frühen Todes eines Angehörigen, womöglich sogar des eigenen Kindes weit schwieriger (vgl. Baltes+Skrotzki, 1998 S.1137ff).
