In onze samenleving wordt het gevoel dat de tijd ons in een wurgende greep houdt, steeds meer overheersend. Tijd wordt voornamelijk als een economische wet beschouwd, die ten volste benut en rendabel gemaakt moet worden. Druk bezig zijn en een overvolle agenda hebben is synoniem met een succesvol bestaan. Als er op een ochtend nauwelijks mails binnenkomen, kan de vertwijfeling reeds toeslaan. Leegte, rust en nietsdoen zijn geen inspiratiebronnen meer, maar de angstaanjagende voorboden van een bestaan in de marges van de maatschappij. De hang naar activiteit en de snelheid waarmee technologische ontwikkelingen zich opvolgen geven velen de indruk de tijd niet meer bij te kunnen benen. `Geen tijd hebben lijkt dan ook een fundamentele ervaring van deze tijd te zijn. Daarmee is tijd het schaarsteproduct bij uitstek geworden. In Stil de tijd neemt Joke J. Hermsen dit verschijnsel kritisch onder de loep. Vanuit het gedachtegoed van Henri Bergson, Ernst Bloch, Peter Sloterdijk en Emmanuel Levinas ontwikkelt zij een nieuwe visie op het fenomeen tijd, waarin zij een onderscheid aanbrengt tussen kloktijd en innerlijke tijd. Zij stelt belangrijke vragen als `Van wie is de tijd?' en `Bestaat er nog een persoonlijke tijd?' en legt haar oor te luisteren bij schrijvers en kunstenaars die deze innerlijke tijd in hun werk hebben proberen te verbeelden. Tegen de huidige tijdgeest in verkent zij het belang van rust, verveling, aandacht en wachten. Ervaringen die sinds de Oudheid als de belangrijkste voorwaarden voor het denken en de creativiteit werden beschouwd, maar die in het huidige economische tijdsgewricht op weinig waardering hoeven te rekenen. Ten slotte schetst Hermsen de politieke en sociale gevolgen van onze rusteloze en in meerdere opzichten op drift geraakte samenleving.
