Still Little Barton comprises seven short stories on Bartons early experiences with learning about concepts in measurement. Bartons and his little friend learn to tell time on their own, as they unravel the workings of a clock. The last two stories explore concepts in money and linear measure. In The hour has come, Bartons little friend introduces Barton to a beautiful watch which he got as a present from an Aunt. He confesses to Barton that he is embarrassed to wear it because he cannot tell the time. Barton admits that he is also not knowledgeable on the subject and they agree that they will meet regularly to share their ideas on telling time. They begin by observing both hands of the clock and associating time on the hour with different events. In the second story, In an hour, the boys continue their investigations. However, they focus on the duration of events. Concepts of one hour, two hours and half an hour are explored. The boys are able to relate these durations to events with which they are accustomed. For example, they used the comparison one hour as the duration of their luncheon period. In Little Times, smaller durations such as one/two minutes are explored. The boys also learn the relationship between minutes and hours by observing, not just the analog clock, but the digital clocks as well. The have fun watching the minutes go by on the digital clock and explore the concept of one minute as they perform activities which take one or two minutes. Round as a biscuit, busy as a bee is a short story relating concepts in time to rhyming words. Barton composes a poem on the clock and his little friend is impressed, but admits that he has difficulty in rhyming words. Barton encourages him and is quite flattered when he makes his first attempt at creating a poem. In Good, better, best, Bartons Mom is proud of him as he demonstrates how good he is at calculating bills and determining change. She is even more proud of him when he discovers that the cashier in the bakery made a mistake and gave her more change than was correct. Both Mom and Barton promptly returned the extra change to the grateful cashier. What measure meant explores the concepts in linear measurement. Barton learns why there is the need to measure, through conversations with his Dad on the use of a ruler. He later questions his Dad on measuring longer distances and gathers more information on units of measure for length.

LITTLE BARTON Little Barton comprises seven short stories on Bartons early experiences in school. Barton and his little friend learn together as they engage in lively discussions on what they have been learning in school. The focus is on developing concepts and vocabulary in Number (in particular, Addition and Subtraction) and Geometry. In the story, I Like School the reader is encouraged to like school as Bartons teacher reassures her class that it is not unusual to miss home and their moms. She warms to them by reading a poem inviting them to look forward to the joys of learning. Adding to a Friend is a story in which Barton teaches his newly found friend how to add without using his fingers. The little boy is delighted to learn and forms a bond with Barton, as they go around the schoolyard counting objects that they see. In No Matter How, Bartons friend has become so proficient at addition that he begins to discover new relationships and eagerly awaits his encounters with Barton so that he can share his findings. The boys discuss this new relationship (commutative property) and even Barton is amazed at this remarkable property. In Take Away, subtraction is the major focus as Bartons friend explains to Barton how he can now perform subtraction in his head. The boys practice their subtraction skills as they explore their environment looking for meaningful examples that model subtraction. In The Both of Us the boys explore multi-step problems involving addition and subtraction. The problems are all connected to their experience as they investigate situations around the school and neighbourhood. Jingle Maths introduces Bartons class to rhyme and rhythm as Bartons teacher challenges the class to create a poem. Barton accepts the challenge and is overjoyed when Miss asks him to read his poem for the class. The Hunters is a story on the explorations of two little boys (Barton and his friend) as they hunt for squares. The story vividly captures the readers imagination as the boys challenge each other as they attempt to justify their findings.

Widely known today as the "Angel of the Battlefield," Clara Barton's personal life has always been shrouded in mystery. In Clara Barton, Professional Angel, Elizabeth Brown Pryor presents a biography of Barton that strips away the heroic exterior and reveals a complex and often trying woman. Based on the papers Clara Barton carefully saved over her lifetime, this biography is the first one to draw on these recorded thoughts. Besides her own voluminous correspondence, it reflects the letters and reminiscences of lovers, a grandniece who probed her aunt's venerable facade, and doctors who treated her nervous disorders. She emerges as a vividly human figure. Continually struggling to cope with her insecure family background and a society that offered much less than she had to give, she chose achievement as the vehicle for gaining the love and recognition that frequently eluded her during her long life. Not always altruistic, her accomplishments were nonetheless extraordinary. On the battlefields of the Civil War, in securing American participation in the International Red Cross, in promoting peacetime disaster relief, and in fighting for women's rights, Clara Barton made an unparalleled contribution to American social progress. Yet the true measure of her life must be made from this perspective: she dared to offend a society whose acceptance she treasured, and she put all of her energy into patching up the lives of those around her when her own was rent and frayed.

In the years before World War I, Montana cowboy Fred Barton was employed by Czar Nicholas II to help establish a horse ranch--the largest in the world--in Siberia to supply the Russian military. Barton later assembled a group of American rodeo stars and drove horses across Mongolia for the war-lords of northern China, creating a 250,000 acre ranch in Shanxi Province. Along the way, Barton became part of an unofficial U.S. intelligence network in the Far East, bred a new type of horse from Russian, Mongolian and American stock and promoted the lifestyle of the open range cowboy. Returning to America, he married one of the wealthiest widows in the Southwest and hobnobbed with Western film stars at a time when Hollywood was constructing the modern myth of the Old West, just as open range cowboy life was disappearing.
