Recent supply chain literature and practice recognize that significant cost savings can be achieved by coordinating inventory and transportation decisions. Although the existing literature on analytical models for these decisions is very broad, there are still some challenging issues. In particular, the uncertainty of demand in a dynamic system and the structure of various practical transportation cost functions remain unexplored in detail. Taking these motivations into account, this dissertation focuses on the analytical investigation of the impact of transportation-related costs and practices on inventory decisions, as well as the integrated inventory and transportation decisions, under stochastic dynamic demand. Considering complicated, yet realistic, transportation-related costs and practices, we develop and solve three classes of models: (1) Pure inbound inventory model impacted by transportation cost; (2) Pure outbound transportation models concerning shipment consolidation strategy; (3) Integrated inbound inventory and outbound transportation models. In broad terms, we investigate the modeling framework of vendor-customer systems for integrated inventory and transportation decisions, and we identify the optimal inbound and outbound policies for stochastic dynamic supply chain systems. This dissertation contributes to the previous literature by exploring the impact of realistic transportation costs and practices on stochastic dynamic supply chain systems while identifying the structural properties of the corresponding optimal inventory and/or transportation policies. Placing an emphasis on the cases of stochastic demand and dynamic planning, this research has roots in applied probability, optimal control, and stochastic dynamic programming. This book deals with inventory systems in supply chains that face risks that could render products unsalable. These risks include possible cooling system failures, transportation risks, packaging errors, handling errors, or natural quality deterioration over time like spoilage of food or blood products. Classical supply chain inventory models do not regard these risks. This thesis introduces novel cost models that consider these risks. It also analyzes how real-time tracking with RFID sensors and smart containers can contribute to decision making. To solve these cost models, this work presents new solution methods based on dynamic programming. In extensive computational studies both with experimental as well as real-life data from large players in the retailer industry, the solution methods prove to lead to substantially lower costs than existing solution methods and heuristics.

Single vehicle to serve all retailers in a particular region. An ample amount of inventory is available at the warehouse, and the cost of holding this inventory is not included in the model. Retailer demand and vehicle travel times are random, unsatisfied demand is backordered, and the objective is to minimize costs due to holding and backordering inventory (cost rates may differ by retailer) and operating the vehicle. One of the crucial decisions in our problem is the vehicle idling policy: when the vehicle is at the warehouse, the controller can either send the vehicle out with a full load or let the vehicle sit idle; because we employ a long run average cost criterion, if the vehicle does not idle and the traffic intensity of the system is less than one, then an infinite amount of retailer inventory will build up over the long run. We review academic research on dual-sourcing (or dual-mode) dynamic stochastic inventory models, which study the replenishment of inventory from two sources (or two transportation modes) in the presence of demand uncertainty. The classic assumption, also adopted here, is that the two sources (modes) differ by replenishment lead times and costs. We cover both discrete- and continuous-time models. A feature distinguishing our review from others is that ours is more technically detailed and provides self-contained proofs of several fundamental results in the dual-sourcing literature.
