La 4e de couverture indique : "L'initiative « 4 pour 1 000 : les sols pour la sécurité alimentaire et le climat » propose d'augmenter chaque année d'un quatre millième le stock de carbone présent dans tous les sols du monde. À la demande de l'Ademe et du ministère de l'Agriculture et de l'Alimentation, l'Inra (devenu aujourd'hui INRAE) a conduit une étude, centrée sur la France métropolitaine, visant à estimer le potentiel de stockage de carbone des sols agricoles et forestiers et, in fine, à mesurer la contribution potentielle de ce levier à l'objectif de réduction des émissions nettes de gaz à effet de serre. Diverses pratiques candidates (cultures intermédiaires, apport de nouvelles ressources organiques, gestion des prairies, agroforesterie) ont été évaluées. Les résultats obtenus ont montré une forte variabilité du stockage additionnel de carbone. L'étude a également permis d'estimer le coût supplémentaire, pour les agriculteurs, de mise en œuvre de ces pratiques de stockage, puis une allocation de l'effort de stockage entre les pratiques et les régions a été effectuée. Ces données permettront aux différents acteurs concernés de faire les meilleurs choix pour stocker davantage de carbone dans les sols. Cet ouvrage s'adresse aux décideurs chargés de l'élaboration des politiques publiques climatiques dans le domaine agricole, aux responsables territoriaux, aux aménageurs, aux ingénieurs et techniciens, aux agriculteurs et à l'ensemble des citoyens intéressés par la problématique de l'agriculture et du changement climatique."

ABC'Terre est une méthode de calcul des émissions gaz à effet de serre (GES) des systèmes de culture à l'échelle territoriale qui intègre les variations de stock de carbone organique des sols sur le long terme. Son application sur le territoire du Pays Rhin Vignoble Grand Ballon, caractérisé par la dominance du maïs grain et la dépendance à l'irrigation, met en évidence que (i) le territoire génère de fortes émissions brutes (ii) une part importante des émissions est liée à la fertilisation azotée minérale (iii) le stockage de carbone a le potentiel d'atténuer plus de la moitié des émissions sur 30 ans. Un processus participatif de co-conception de pratiques faiblement émettrices de GES à partir d'une rotation « Soja-Blé-Maïs » a été entamé avec des agriculteurs et a donné lieu à la construction de systèmes de culture innovants. Le diagnostic de ces systèmes alternatifs suggère que l'implantation de cultures intermédiaires n'est pas un levier suffisant pour diminuer les émissions nettes. En revanche, un scénario plus en rupture, l'introduction de 3 ans de luzerne dans la rotation, a un réel potentiel d'amélioration du bilan. Une évaluation multicritère montre que les systèmes en rupture sont plus performants sur le plan environnemental, mais actuellement moins rentables et plus exigeants en main d'oeuvre que le système actuel. Ainsi, pour améliorer durablement le bilan du territoire, il sera nécessaire de soutenir de nouvelles filières bas-intrants. Ces résultats pourront contribuer à l'identification de pistes d'action pour le Plan Climat Air Energie Territorial.
