L'esigenza di capire chi siamo e da dove veniamo è particolarmente sentita in questo inizio di millennio, mentre i confini nazionali dei paesi europei si dissolvono sotto l'impulso della globalizzazione economica e dell'unificazione politica, e una spinta migratoria irresistibile provoca un rimescolamento senza precedenti di popoli e culture. Ma per evitare manipolazioni è indispensabile una riflessione critica sulla storia, che utilizzi gli strumenti d'interpretazione più aggiornati: scopriremo allora che le nozioni oggi in causa, di Europa o di civiltà occidentale, di mondo cristiano o dì Islam, non corrispondono a identità fisse e immutabili, ma che il loro volto attuale si è formato nel corso dei millenni, in un gioco incessante di condizionamenti reciproci. Il titolo stesso della Storia d'Europa e del Mediterraneo contiene una risposta all'interrogativo cruciale: che cos'è l'Europa? I quindici volumi di quest'opera senza precedenti rintracciano l'intero sviluppo della civiltà europea, nella convinzione che questa vicenda millenaria possa essere compresa soltanto nel quadro più ampio del bacino mediterraneo, col suo intreccio senza eguali di culture e di fedi diverse.
