I protagonisti di questo libro sono come sei personaggi «in cerca d’autore» sul palcoscenico della Storia. Sono i Tre Re sapienti venuti da lontano e giunti a Betlemme seguendo una stella. E sono i due Ladroni, crocefissi alla sinistra e alla destra di Gesù, ultimi a parlargli. E c’è un quarto re fantasma, che si fa chiamare Prete e manda al mondo una Lettera gentile e minacciosa: sulle sue terre sconfinate nessuno ha più potere di lui. Sono le figure fuggevoli di una condizione umana che supera i limiti temporali degli eventi e celebra gli atti del Bene o le stirpi di Caino. Il viaggio sulle loro tracce va al di là del Mediterraneo, attraversa popoli e paesi verso la Terrasanta, dall’Eurasia all’Africa e al Medio ed Estremo Oriente, mentre le voci, le tradizioni orali e i racconti popolari descrivono un mutevole universo. Ebraismo, Cristianesimo e Islam misurano l’immenso orizzonte di deserti, regioni e distanze mai percorse prima. Questo brulicare di presenze, comunità, linguaggi e abitudini perenni trasmette emozioni che giungono fino ai tempi nostri. Dalla Galilea di Erode e Ponzio Pilato si arriva all’Europa di Goethe, Kafka, Pirandello e Beckett, fino alle strade di Mosca raccontate da Bulgakov. E sempre la domanda ritorna: è bastata la nascita del bambino di Betlemme a cambiare il mondo? Occidente e Oriente se lo chiedono ancora. E se lo chiede la letteratura fra Vangeli, antichi testi, Apocrifi, opere medievali e Libro dei Tre Re, qui tradotto integralmente. Le genti di perdute città, i nomadi delle steppe dell’Asia centrale mandano notizie di sconosciute realtà fra paure, speranze e misteri. Così, ogni anno, i Tre Re si mettono in viaggio per il più antico pellegrinaggio del tempo nuovo. Ogni anno la Lettera del Prete re provoca e ammalia i nemici e, ogni anno, i due Ladroni, crocefissi con Gesù, muoiono insieme a lui, ripetendo il dramma della sofferenza umana o l’ansia incessante per la salvezza. I sei personaggi mettono in discussione i temi del Bene e del Male. Sono attori sempre in scena: la loro storia sta fissata in una realtà che ancora oggi, più di duemila anni dopo, riguarda tutti.
