Concepita nei giorni più bui della seconda guerra mondiale, «quando bisognava rianimare nei cuori dei giovani la fiamma della libertà contro il falso prestigio della barbarie totalitaria», quest'opera è ormai divenuta un classico della storia dell'educazione. Accanto alla celebre Paideia di Jaeger, è il testo complessivo più rilevante - così è stato scritto - sull'educazione classica. Non si tratta in realtà di un manuale di teoria pedagogica o di storia delle scuole greco-romane, ma di una ricerca storica e di un'analisi di tutte le componenti della cultura greca, romana e cristiana. La solidissima competenza archeologica, filologica e pedagogica dell'autore illumina dal di dentro ogni pagina. Rispettosa del significato pregnante del concetto di paideia, che è sintesi e concentrato di una cultura, cultura ed educazione insieme, l'opera finisce per essere fondamentalmente una storia della cultura antica, e nello stesso momento una storia delle idee e delle istituzioni educative dell'antichità. La disamina privilegia però i fatti e vede la forza delle dottrine nella loro capacità di realizzarsi in fenomeni concreti. L'itinerario della paideia è seguito dalle origini alla comparsa delle prime scuole cristiane di tipo medievale, sia nel mondo greco, prendendo le mosse dai modelli dell'educazione cavalleresca descritti nei poemi omerici, sia nella cultura latina, a partire dai costumi tipici della cultura contadina dell'età regia e dei primi secoli della repubblica. Un arco temporale che abbraccia quindici secoli. È un'opera che non può lasciare indifferente - e fino ad oggi non l'ha lasciata - la cultura dei nostri anni, perché delinea le origini dirette della nostra tradizione pedagogica.

Ambrose, the first patrician bishop and a prolific writer of a broad range of works, presents numerous opportunities for interdisciplinary research. His participation in many social groups, sometimes at odds with each other, and sometimes overlapping, demanded flexibility. The result is a protean figure, whose motives are not always clear. His own works and those of the scholars who contribute to this volume are accordingly multidisciplinary. Fields such as theology (especially historical theology), history, classics, philosophy, linguistics, and aesthetics, among others, and the recent international research that belongs to them nuance the volume’s investigation of Ambrose’s actions and motivations. The reader will find that Ambrose’s efforts to create and to strengthen social cohesion included building relationships and erecting social structures set on the foundations of Nicaean Christianity against heresy and paganism. A fusion of Graeco-Roman and Judeo-Christian intellectual traditions reinforced the solidarity Ambrose promoted. Focusing on the period known as the Second Sophistic (an era roughly co-extensive with the second century AD), this Handbook serves the need for a broad and accessible overview. The study of the Second Sophistic is a relative new-comer to the Anglophone field of classics and much of what characterizes it temporally and culturally remains a matter of legitimate contestation. The present handbook offers a diversity of scholarly voices that attempt to define, as much as is possible in a single volume, the state of this rapidly developing field. Included are chapters that offer practical guidance on the wide range of valuable textual materials that survive, many of which are useful or even core to inquiries of particularly current interest (e.g. gender studies, cultural history of the body, sociology of literary culture, history of education and intellectualism, history of religion, political theory, history of medicine, cultural linguistics, intersection of the Classical traditions and early Christianity). The Handbook also contains essays devoted to the work of the most significant intellectuals of the period such as Plutarch, Dio Chrysostom, Lucian, Apuleius, the novelists, the Philostrati and Aelius Aristides. In addition to content and bibliographical guidance, however, this volume is designed to help to situate the textual remains within the period and its society, to describe and circumscribe not simply the literary matter but the literary culture and societal context. For that reason, the Handbook devotes considerable space at the front to various contextual essays, and throughout tries to keep the contextual demands in mind. In its scope and in its pluralism of voices this Handbook thus represents a new approach to the Second Sophistic, one that attempts to integrate Greek literature of the Roman period into the wider world of early imperial Greek, Latin, Jewish, and Christian cultural production, and one that keeps a sharp focus on situating these texts within their socio-cultural context.
