Doris Lessing ha vissuto fino ai trent’anni in Rhodesia del Sud (dal 1980 Zimbabwe), in seguito è stata esiliata dal paese per il suo impegno comunista contro il razzismo dei coloni bianchi, tornandovi in visita nel 1982, dopo ventisei anni dal suo esilio. Tale percorso ha suscitato l’interesse sul modo in cui Doris Lessing tratta i rapporti fra i neri e i bianchi all’interno delle sue opere nel corso di sessanta anni. Il punto di vista generalmente è dei coloni bianchi, poiché Doris Lessing è cresciuta all’interno del loro contesto; tuttavia, grazie alla “diversità” nel percepire il mondo in cui ha vissuto, Lessing mostra come i personaggi di colore abbiamo delle reazioni e agiscano secondo la loro individualità. Con ciò la scrittrice dimostra che sia neri che bianchi si relazionano l’un l’altro e, non meno importante, che entrambi i gruppi sono “schiavi” delle regole che il sistema coloniale ha legittimato. Quello che si nota quindi è una serie di contraddizioni che si vengono a creare all’interno del sistema coloniale e postcoloniale, portando così a considerare Doris Lessing non solo come un’osservatrice superpartes e obiettiva dei rapporti tra neri e bianchi, ma anche come una vera e propria autrice coloniale e soprattutto postcoloniale. Proprio per la sua prolificità e per le tematiche postcoloniali Doris Lessing non solo si occupa di rapporti umani fra culture e razze diverse, ma anche di tematiche riguardanti il transculturalismo, il ruolo dei subalterni, la stereotipia, l’ibridismo, suscitando maggiore stimolo ad approfondire l’aspetto postcoloniale e antropologico di Lessing. Le opere trattate sono The Grass is Singing, Collective African Stories e African Laughter, Four Visits to Zimbabwe. I primi due mostrano i rapporti che vi sono all’interno del sistema coloniale tra gli anni venti e cinquanta, il terzo mostra gli stessi rapporti in una prospettiva postcoloniale, dagli anni ottanta e novanta.
