Nel periodo storico universalmente riconosciuto come "Risorgimento italiano" un ruolo di primo piano venne ricoperto dall'Armata Sarda. Risorta nel periodo della restaurazione più come strumento per continuare a salvaguardare gli interessi della dinastia Sabauda che per essere un vero esercito nazionale, come tale fu sconfitta nella sua prima grande prova bellica durante le campagne del 1848-1849 condotte contro il meglio organizzato e potente esercito austriaco. Seppe, però con tenacia ed orgoglio rapidamente risorgere a nuova vita, grazie soprattutto ad un'importante serie di innovative riforme nate nel periodo che va dal 1849 al 1859 su iniziativa del generale Alfonso la Marmora e che traevano origine dai lungimiranti ed ambiziosi progetti politici del conte Camillo Benso di Cavour. L'armata di Goito, Custoza e Novara si era così trasformata in uno vero esercito nazionale, strumento più moderno ed efficiente al servizio di un'azione politica che aveva nella realizzazione di un grande stato italiano, degno di stare al passo con gli altri stati europei, il suo obbiettivo principale. Passando dalla buona prova offerta nel conflitto in Crimea al nuovo scontro con l'Impero Austroungarico a fianco delle truppe francesi di Napoleone III, l'Armata Sarda divenne uno dei protagonisti indiscussi delle vicende militari che portarono alla formazione del Regno d'Italia e rappresentò il modello sul quale il generale Manfredo Fanti creò il nuovo Regio Esercito Italiano.
