«Che magnifico paradosso: c’è un autore che si raccoglie sotto la bandiera del liberalismo; che anche nel passaggio al campo socialista assicura di non averla mai ripiegata quella bandiera; un autore che ha ispirato i suoi comportamenti al più schietto individualismo; c’è un autore che poi, per procurare un fondamento ai valori etico-politici, per rinserrare l’opzione socialista nel fortilizio dell’oggettività, finisce per aggirarsi nei territori dell’organicismo, ossia di quel sistema di pensiero che dell’individualismo liberale è la più clamorosa negazione». Bertrand Russell non è stato solo un grande logico matematico. È stato anche un pensatore politico che molti suoi esegeti hanno voluto inscrivere nel firmamento del socialismo liberale, ossia di un socialismo che svolge e non capovolge gli assunti del liberalismo. Tuttavia si tratta di un errore di prospettiva, di un equivoco, che il libro aiuta a correggere, smentendo questa specie di scivolo che lascia placidamente trascorrere dal liberalismo al socialismo. Ricorrendo anche a citazioni testuali – alle quali troppo spesso è stata data la sordina –, Gaetano Pecora dimostra che nel pensiero di Russell tra le due cose, tra il liberalismo e il socialismo, c’è la rottura, c’è il salto che ne strapazza i ragionamenti e lascia nel lettore un’impressione divisa. Divisa soprattutto quanto al socialismo che, per le suggestioni anti-proprietarie cui Russell più volte cedette, si pone in cruda alternativa con quel liberalismo che pure fa bella mostra di sé in altre parti del suo magistero. In questo senso Russell si posiziona effettivamente tra il liberalismo e il socialismo; sta tra l’uno e l’altro perché in bilico su un equilibrio precario di pensieri che spesso stridono tra loro. Stesso discorso per l’etica. Il liberalismo di Russell canta su ogni tono quando è irrorato da una vena scettica che lo fa sospettoso del Bene e del Giusto. Solo, però, che a un certo momento anche questo scetticismo si ingorga con la tentazione di procurare un fondamento oggettivo, e perciò stesso assoluto, alle scelte politiche. Che è tentazione insidiosissima, alla quale Russell cedette spesso, specie quando si cimentò nell’impresa di accreditare il socialismo come un fatto di verità universale che tutti – proprio tutti – avrebbero potuto riconoscere, se solo si fossero svestiti dei loro pregiudizi. In questo senso, Russell fu combattuto in se stesso tra lo scetticismo e l’assolutismo. Fu, più precisamente, uno scettico con la nostalgia dell’assoluto.
