Excerpt from Storia Delle Lettere e Delle Arti in Italia, Vol. 4: Giusta le Reciproche Loro Rispondenze, Ordinata Nelle Vite e Nei Ritratti Degli Uomini Illustri dal Secolo XIII Fino Ai Nostri Giorni V'è tanta discordia fra'giudici letterarn dell' Ortis, che per lo pm gli uni censurano appunto le cose lodato dagli altri. Lo stile, hanno detto i censori, 49 non che bizzarro, è oscuro spesso, e incertissimo, e dissonante da sè alle volte par casereccio, alle volte oratorio; or pedestre, or poetico: e non in parti di verse del libro; ma nella stessa lettera e pagina, e a lato ad un vocabolo recon dito de' trecenlisti, s'incontra un idiotismo de' Fiorentini d'oggi, e modi dante schi e biblici, sensa dire d' infinite frasi di conio dello scrittore. E de' periodi spezzati, e spezzatamente disarmonici, e sconnessi per penuria di congiunzioni; così che spesso chi vi togliesse la punteggiatura penerebbe a raccapezzarne il significato: insomma, è stile che, come non è fatto sovra ottimi esempli, cosi non avrà che pessimi imitatori. Gli avvenimenti tutti che danno principio, progresso e catastrofe all'azione, sono si scarsi e miseri, che ove si prescinda dagli episodii, non basterebbero a dar moto a un cortissimo dramma; e sono tessuti in guisa che il lettore li prevede da sè innanzi tratto? Difetto capitale d' arte, di cui l' autore o compilatore che sia, il quale pubblicò il libro, s'ac corse si poro che l'eroe disperato della prima lettera è pure, né più nè me no il disperato dell' ultima; se non che a principio parla, e in fine opera ma non sa fa altro che uccidersi: e dagli il ottobre 4797 a' 23 marzo 4799 discorre sempre egli solo da farne un volume. É fuor di dubbio che, ove quei fatti siano realmente accaduti, gli altri pochi personaggi che sono connessi neces sariamente all' azione avranno anch' essi esternato l' animo loro, e operato secondo i lor proprii interessi ed affetti: in oltre dicono e agiscono poco o nulla: e quel poco unicamente per l' Ortis; e caso che tutto fosse invenzione, ognun vede come nel silenzio e nell' inazione di que' personaggi la natura in assai male imitata. Verae che Teresa, di sotto al velo virginale dal quale è coperta, si fa scorgere innamoratissima; e in questa parte sarebbe carattere ben ideato se non che vi si sente dell'incoerenza; da che tanto amore può assai difficil mente associarsi'a tanta virtù, sino al sacrificio che la giovine si mariti ad un uomo che essa non può amare; sacrificio antiveduto da lungo tempo senza che mai vi sia frapposto verun tentativo a distorto; ed è consumato, e il lettore non ode da quella donzella innamoratissima neppure un sommesso lamento. Nè Teresa e carattere che possa stare da sè; e si vede che è ripiegato e modellato e attratto, per cosi dire, dall'0rtis, e fa trasparirele stesse qualità d'animo, e pensa ed ama e quasi parla nel modo stesso: tutto al più, per la dif ferenza del sesso, dell'età e dell' educazione, mostrasi meno ardita, meno aspra e meno ostinata. Come poi un uomo si agitato dalle passioni, e d' indole si im paziente, possa compiacersi di descrizioni campestri, e osservare d' altra parte tante minuzie, e ragionare sovr'esse sino a desumerne delle massime generali; e perchè mai si diletti di registrare nelle sue lettere tutti gli accidenti meteoro logici, mostrando in sè stesso un vivente barometro dell'atmosfera che lo cir condava: sono quesiti a'quali non si può forse dare risposta, se non col dire, che s' è voluto stampare tutto quello che fu scritto dall' Ortis, senza pigliarsi pensiero se sia tutto conforne alle leggi dell' arte, agli esempii de' grandi scrit tori, e soprattutto ai modi co'quali la natura suole procedere. Che poi due passioni cosi diverse, quali pur sono il furore di patria e l' amore, possano ardere simultaneamente nell' anima d'un solo individuo, e tutte due si manifestino Spesso in uno stesso periodo, e talvolta in una sola frase, e.
