Questo libro presenta al lettore italiano una prima raccolta organica di contributi alla "semiotica delle passioni". Si tratta di una nuova direzione di ricerca nello studio dei processi della significazione e della comunicazione, che riscopre con strumenti attuali la lunga tradizione teorica sulle passioni. Oltre a proporre i mezzi per costruire una semantica narrativa delle emozioni, in questo contesti ci si interroga sugli aspetti affettivi della semiosi, non riducibili alla dimensione cognitiva. I saggi raccolti nel volume si possono dividere in tre gruppi: al primo (Greimas, Quèrè, Marsciani, Bertrand, Geninasca, Fontanille) appartengono a studi che hanno il loro punto di partenza nell'analisi di passioni rappresentate nei testi narrativi. Calabrese, Careri e Thurlemann lavorano invece sul testo visivo e plastico. Agli scritti di Bateson, Savan e Fabbri infine il compito di mostrare le possibilità e le convergenze di questa ricerca nell'ambito più generale delel scienze umane.

Un'analisi di ampio respiro teorico e storico, che mostra come l'opposizione tra ragione e passioni indica il fallimento di ogni etica e di ogni politica che continuano a oscillare tra norme repressive e atteggiamenti lassistici. A lungo le passioni sono state condannate come fattori di turbamento o di perdita temporanea della ragione. Diverse strategie sono state cosi elaborate per estirparle, temperarle o addomesticarle. Ma, mentre dal punto di vista dell'individuo, si mira all'autocontrollo, dal punto di vista della societa, si tende piuttosto a forgiare, per loro tramite, strumenti di dominio politico. In quanto relativamente fisse nei loro obiettivi e vischiose nella loro composizione, esse erano considerate nel passato suscettibili sia di una rigorosa sistemazione filosofica, sia di un adeguato trattamento politico. Si direbbe invece che oggi siano non soltanto inclassificabili, svuotate di qualsiasi attributo di intrinseca intelligibilita, ma anche soverchiate dai "desideri" (passioni orientate verso mete future, incommensurabili o difficilmente calcolabili). Attraverso un'analisi di ampio respiro teorico e storico, questo libro mostra come l'opposizione tra ragione e passioni indica il fallimento di ogni etica e di ogni politica che continuino a oscillare tra norme repressive e atteggiamenti lassistici. Nella sua struttura, il volume e concepito in termini "geometrici": in forma di un'ellisse disegnata secondo coppie di "fuochi". Paura e speranza, nella loro tensione complementare, ne compongono i nuclei generatori. Da esse -quasi un'archeologia concettuale delle passioni e delle virtu -si snoda il percorso di ricerca, che attraversa anche "valichi" del pensiero filosofico (in particolare Spinoza, nella sua polemica contro gli stoici e Descartes' e alcuni luoghi esemplari della teoria politica (in particolare il giacobinismo francese).

The Individual without Passions: Modern Individualism and the Loss of the Social Bond offers an innovative look at an extremely timely and important issue—individualism—from the point of view of a theory of passions. This book underlines the importance of the problem of the passions in both forming individual identity and building the social bond. Drawing inspiration from classic authors that represent fundamental milestones along the route of modern individualism—from Montaigne to Hobbes, from Locke to Smith, from Rousseau to Tocqueville—The Individual without Passions puts forward new hypotheses that contrast with the consolidated views of contemporary reflection, both modern and postmodern. Elena Pulcini argues that passions are crucial not only when they are strong (homo oeconomicus), but also when absent or weak (homo democraticus), in both cases producing pathological effects on the Self and the social bond. Finally, this book underlines that the image of the modern individual does not end with the egoistical passions and that it is possible to reactivate empathetic and solidaristic passions; furthermore, it proposes the hypothesis that the solidaristic passions go to fight the egoistical passions. This hypothesis seems confirmed and is most evident in the phenomenon of the gift (as interpreted by Marcel Mauss and his contemporary heirs), the “hidden” testimony of a desire for belonging which enables us to propose a new figure of the individual—homo reciprocus.
