Following the defeat of Napoleon in 1814, an event that signalled an end to nearly fourteen years of French domination, Florence seemed to enter a new cultural 'golden age' and by 1824 was described as 'an Earthly Paradise' by the political and liberal writer, Pietro Giordano. Politically, economically and culturally, the city prospered in this new era. After 1814 it seemed as if the Enlightenment had found a new beginning in Florence. Aubrey Garlington, a scholar of long standing in the music of early nineteenth-century Florence, considers the roles played by John Fane, Lord Burghersh, an English aristocrat, diplomat and dilettante composer together with his wife, Priscilla, in the development of the richly homogeneous culture that blossomed in Florence at this time. Burghersh, known today for being instrumental in the founding of the English Royal Academy of Music, composed six operas that were performed privately on numerous occasions at the English Embassy, his best known work being "La Fedra". Lady Burghersh became known for her painting and dilettante theatrical performances. Garlington provides a thorough re-examination of the categories 'professional' and 'dilettante' which were so important in the concept of music at this time. The notions of boundaries between public and private activity are discussed, and the operas themselves are examined specifically. Through the contemplation of the Burghershs's sixteen year stay in Florence, the significance of dilettante orientations are demonstrated to have been essential components for the city's musical and social life. Garlington draws together an impressive compilation of documentation regarding the part music played in shaping society and culture. In this way, the book will appeal not only to opera historians, musicologists and critics working on the nineteenth century, but also to historians and scholars of cultural theory.

Il saggio prende avvio dalle proteste popolari contro il progetto di due mega impianti inquinanti di trattamento rifiuti che hanno visto come scenario la media valle del fiume Crati in Calabria tra la fine degli anni novanta del secolo scorso e i mesi a cavallo tra il 2013 e il 2014. A partire da queste esperienze di impegno e di lotta popolare a tutela degli equilibri ecoambientali del territorio, l'autore propone strategie alternative per la gestione dei rifiuti e piu' in generale per lo sviluppo delle zone rurali interne e dei borghi storici attraverso la la riscoperta delle identita', delle tradizioni e delle risorse paesaggistiche, storico-culturali, agricole, enogastronomiche e folcloristiche locali : in una parola agricultura. In un intero capitolo del volume viene tracciata una mappa dei disastri ambientali in quella che viene definita la Calabria dei fuochi. Infine l'autore, nel ripercorrere le tappe fondamentali del movimento ecologista nel novecento ne mette a nudo limiti e contraddizioni. Tale variegato mondo, ha subito, sempre secondo lo scrittore, strumentalizzazioni politiche che ne hanno svuotato le enormi potenzialita', relegandolo in gabbie ideologiche prive di qualsivoglia fondamento storico.

Seguito dei precedenti, uno dedicato al 1914 e l’altro al primo semestre del 1915, il presente volume descrive lo svolgersi della guerra sulla nostra frontiera orientale. Mentre tutti si aspettavano una rapida e vittoriosa conclusione, emersero sul campo i nodi di una decisione diplomatica affrettata (il Patto di Londra) che mise in difficoltà i vertici militari. Difficoltà che si tradussero in una mobilitazione tardiva, tanto che, dichiarata la guerra il 24 maggio, la prima vera grande offensiva (la Prima Battaglia dell’Isonzo) fu lanciata solo un mese dopo, il 23 giugno 1915. Il primo mese di guerra lo chiamammo “Il balzo in avanti”, un eufemismo per dire che l’Esercito entrò in guerra impreparato; una impreparazione che ci costò cara in quanto diede tempo all’Austria-Ungheria di far affluire verso il suo confine meridionale, al momento della dichiarazione di guerra indifeso, sufficienti truppe per contrastare la nostra avanzata. Dopo la prima offensiva, ne lanciammo, nei mesi successivi, altre tre, (Seconda, Terza e Quarta Battaglia dell’Isonzo) che in sostanza non ebbero alcun successo. L’euforia del “maggio radioso” pian piano lasciò il posto alla disillusione e alla rassegnazione, mascherata da esteriorità patriottiche. La guerra non sarebbe stata né breve né facile e il Paese né prese atto. Nel volume questo andamento della guerra è descritto riportando l’impiego in linea delle Brigate di fanteria dal nome marchigiano, “Marche”, “Ancona” e “Macerata” e da altre, come la Brigata “Messina” e la Brigata “Acqui” che erano di stanza, in tempo di pace, nelle Marche. In più si descrive le vicende della Brigata “Alpi” per riportare l’interventismo risorgimentale alla prova della trincea. Il volume presenta le Marche come regione di prima linea, in quanto, dopo aver dato il concetto di “trincea marittima”, nel descrivere la strategia adottata dalla Regia Marina, sottolinea il ruolo di Ancona come piazzaforte offensiva. E su questa scia da i primi tratti di come le provincie marchigiane, Pesaro, Ancona, Macerata Ascoli Piceno ed il fermano, subissero incisivi cambiamenti socioeconomici, ora repentini ora più lenti, che la guerra richiedeva. Il volume è anche espressione delle attività, lezioni, seminari, relazioni, e incontri, svolte nel secondo semestre 2015 dall’Autore per ricordare e celebrare il centenario della Grande Guerra.
