Sin dal primo momento della sua comparsa nel 1923 Storia e coscienza di classe accese un aspro dibattito. Condannata dall’Internazionale comunista, per bocca di Zinov’ev, come un’opera idealista, la sua circolazione fu limitata a pochissimi esemplari, finché nel 1957 non venne tradotta in francese, contro la volontà dello stesso Lukács. La traduzione avallava l’ipotesi di due momenti distinti nella sua produzione, quello giovanile – fertile di spunti poi ripresi da Adorno, Sartre e Merleau-Ponty – e quello maturo dell’ortodossia, propriamente politico. Per far luce sulla sua opera giovanile tanto discussa, Lukács, nel 1967, scrisse un’introduzione in cui la collocava all’interno dello sviluppo del suo pensiero e in un preciso contesto storico – la disfatta della repubblica rivoluzionaria dei Consigli in Ungheria. Ma non si limitava a questo. Approfondiva gli aspetti che ancora allora reputava validi e condivideva. Ma al di là del giudizio di Lukács sulla sua stessa opera, è indubbio che Storia e coscienza di classe è una tappa obbligata della teoria marxista, la cui influenza però è andata ben oltre quell’ambito, investendo gli altri campi del sapere, non ultimo quello filosofico.
