Simile a un enciclopedista cinese, Borges volle accostare una sequenza di destini tenebrosi come altrettanti «esercizi di prosa narrativa». Il tono è quello, impassibile, di chi intende «raccontare con lo stesso scrupolo le esistenze degli uomini, siano stati divini, mediocri o criminali», e ritrovarle tutte in una pura «superficie di immagini». Ma chi cercasse in questi ritratti dati certi e attendibili si ingannerebbe. Ispiratore occulto è qui Marcel Schwob, che nelle sue "Vite immaginarie" inventava le biografie di uomini «che erano realmente esistiti ma di cui non si sapeva pressoché nulla». Procedimento che in Borges si inverte: «leggevo la vita di un personaggio conosciuto e la deformavo e falsificavo deliberatamente secondo la mia fantasia». Comune a Schwob e a Borges rimane una certa scansione della frase, che «dà un’impressione di ironia per il naturale contrasto che si crea tra un fatto che ci sembra meraviglioso o abominevole e la brevità sdegnosa di un racconto». Con la sua usuale sprezzatura, Borges definì una volta queste storie «l’irresponsabile gioco di un timido». Di fatto erano il primo gioiello di una nuova specie di letteratura. "Storia universale dell’infamia" apparve nel 1935.
