Non è storicamente sostenibile la tesi secondo cui tutto il Medioevo fu un periodo di decadenza e di oscurantismo. Quello fu anche il tempo in cui, pure in presenza di una società feudale, ebbe inizio e si affermò la civiltà cittadina; si consolidarono l'economia finanziaria e le attività manifatturiere; si posero le basi delle monarchie nazionali; vissero Carlo Magno, Ruggero II, Gregorio VII, Innocenzo III, Federico II, Federico Barbarossa, s. Benedetto, s. Francesco e Dante; nacque e si diffuse sul territorio europeo la vita monastica; le crociate andarono alla conquista di Gerusalemme; la Chiesa portò con sé in Europa la civiltà greco-romana. La Chiesa che pure imperversò con l'Inquisizione: il tribunale ecclesiastico che fu strumento di repressione di eresie e di libertà.
