Vast and wide spread ignorance exists concerning the facts, persons, places and sequences of the Ante-Mosaic, Israelitish and New Testament activity. This little book, of elements and rudimentary facts, has been prepared to aid parents and teachers in the development of the soul of the child by the study of the pure depths of holy History. Though it is intended to guide the child-mind along the path of the sacred Narrative, it cannot be denied that the chief thoughts and widest unfoldings of its Record cluster around the manifestation of the Person, and the declaration of the Mediatorial Wonder-work of our adorable, true and only Redeemer, Jesus Christ. To achieve the very best results, for the child, both memorizing and reviewing are necessary. It is earnestly hoped that teachers will first see that the verses to be committed are recited from memory, and discover whether the passages of Scripture, [or marked portions thereof, ] have been read in preparation during the previous week. The book has been so arranged that five lessons are given to reviewing, during the year. This volume may be used at home, or school as one of a series of graded text books, either simultaneously with others, or consecutively. But no child should be promoted unless it knows the facts of the book it lays aside. The "Story" is the children's part of the lesson. In doing so we earnestly hope and sincerely pray that the stories will assist the teachers in presenting to the chil dren under their care lessons that will so impress the lit tle folks as to broaden and strengthen their characters, increase their faith, and make Latter-day Saints of them. Never fail to read and prayerfully study the Bible text itself, that you may be able to live the experience covered by the story, recognize the value of the truth it portrays, make the 'message your own, and from the abundance of your love for the truth, for our Heavenly Father, and for the children, give it to the little ones in such a way as to lead them to know, to fee-l, and to live the truth. Remember always that the story is but a means and not an end - a means to reach and enrich their souls - not merely their intellects. Tell it to them in your own way - the way best calculated to appeal to the hearts of the children of your class. Remember, however, that there are certain fundamentals that make for good story telling. First there must be an interesting Point of Contact Each lesson is provided, with one. You may use it or think out one that will go better. Lastly a good appli cation of the story to the child's life should always be made. Likewise is each lesson provided with an applica tion. The teacher is at liberty to improve on it. Possibly the application can better be fitted to local situations. The Text only is mandatory. However, we expect consistency. If you change the lesson plan at.all, make it consistent throughout. May the Father give you to feel that you have painted upon the living canvas of the soul the lessons of God and truth and immortality that shall resist the decaying hand of time and pass on to eternity. Though simply told, we indulge the hope that these stories will find a welcome in the homes of the p'eople for fireside reading. Excerpt from Bible Stories: To Read and Tell This edition of Old Testament Stories is intended chiefly for use in school and college classes, but it is hoped that the general reader may also find it to his liking. It has been pref pared in accordance with the recommendation of the National Conference on Uniform Entrance Requirements in English, which has assigned readings from the Old Testament, com prising at least the chief episodes in Genesis, Exodus, Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings, and Daniel, together with the books of Ruth and Esther. It has been the plan of the editor to group these episodes, as far as possible, around the great men and women of the Bible. By this arrangement, none of the interest of the inci dents of each hero story, as a separate story, is lost; and much is gained by compelling the student to associate them in his mind as parts of one story or biography. Beyond an index of proper names giving meaning and pronunciation, no notes have been deemed necessary. The text is that of the King James or Authorized Version. The italics and chapter and verse divisions of this version, however, have been discarded, and the text is grouped in paragraphs according to subjects, Besides omissions which were inevitable according to the plan of selection, the reader may note a few paraphrases and some omissions which were thought necessary in preparing the book for high school classes of both sexes. In the introduction is given a brief account of the Jewish nation in Palestine, of the origin and development of the Bible. Excerpt from Bible Stories in Bible Language Many persons will be surprised, as the Compiler of this little book was, to learn that there is no such work already in use. There are, it is true, many children's books containing Bible stories told in modern language, but the objections to Bible stories so told are manifold. No language is so simple or SO condensed as Bible language, and any paraphrase of it must either spread the same amount of matter over a larger surface, or lose some portion of the matter itself in keeping it Within the same limits. Either one or two only of such amplified paraphrases suffice to fill a child's book, to the exclusion of others, or the book contains a number of stories which are only half told. Again, it is almost impossible, in rewriting a story, not to tinge it with the cast of mind and peculiar religious opinions of the rewriter. Parents have not infrequently, therefore, objected to such paraphrases, that their teachings were not such as they believed were to be found in the story itself, or were sometimes not in accordance with their own views of religious truth. There are other children's books containing one or more Bible stories, or parts of stories, given, as in this book, in Bible language; but the compiler of the present collection has been able to find none which aimed at the same completeness.
