Excerpt from English History in American School Text-Books One of my earliest recollections is that of being taken to see the fireworks which were set off at the pierhead in Ramsgate harbor to celebrate the declaration of peace after the Crimean War. From that time until I went, when quite a young man, into the Gallery of Battles in Versailles - a gallery in which the glories of the French armies are celebrated in acres of canvas by the famous French artist Detaille - I never fully realized that Englishmen had ever been defeated by land or sea. I had been brought up in the belief that one Englishman could beat three Johnny Crapauds. But here all my illusions on that score were shattered at one rude blow, for about one picture in. Every three represented a defeat of the English in either a naval or a military engagement. Then I made up my mind with Sir Robert Walpole, that I would study anything but history, for history must be false. Some such awakening has no doubt come to almost every thinking man or woman who has been brought up on the old methods of teaching the history of their country, whether they be English or American, French or German, Turk or Russian - this no doubt has its effect in inspiring a patriotic feeling; in keeping alive a belief in the invincibleness of one's own nation; a faith in its good star, which has led men on to further victories and inspired them to yet more valorous deeds than their forefathers have performed. Excerpt from Places Young Americans, Want to Know See America first is a familiar suggestion. Whatever a young American 'may learn of other lands he surely ought not to be ignorant of his own. In this little book I have endeavored to cast into simple form descriptions of some of the most notable places in the history, geography and scenic beauty of our country. The English lad is taught thoroughly the lessons of the heroes, history and points of natural interest in his own land. Surely a similar course of reading con cerning the most notable places in his country ought to be of value to every American boy. Excerpt from America First: One Hundred Stories From Our Own History When children advance beyond the nursery age, no story is so wonderful as a true story. Fiction to them is never as appealing as fact. I have often been faced with the inquiry: whether or not a story is a true one. The look of gratification, when told that "it actually happened," was most satisfying to me as a story-teller. The nearer a story is to the life and traditions of the child, the more eagerly it is attended. True stories about our own people, about our neighbors and friends, and about our own country at large, are more interesting than true stories of remote places and people. We naturally arc interested in our own affairs, and the nearer they are to us the greater the interest we feel. That history is just a long, thrilling story of the trials and triumphs of pioneers and patriots is well known to those who have had to do with the teaching of history to youthful minds. Excerpt from Mighty England: The Story of the English People To write this book for young Americans, I travelled eight times in England and also visited often Ger many, the Netherlands, and France - countries from which the ancestors of the English people, for the most part, came. It was like tracing a river to its source to go back from the island to the High Dutch Of the German mountains, and like drifting down the flood to stay among the Low Dutch in Holland and Belgium. In France it was more like sailing on the lake, and in Italy, like rowing on a pond. Out Of these countries streams of men and influence have flowed into Great Britain. Yet it was from the Germanic and Norse lands that the great body of ideas and customs of the many tribes that made the English nation came. I have gone into caves and crypts, seen barrows and mounds excavated, and visited the old moot places of the Salic Franks, as well as museums and archives, and have seen corona tions, parades, and pageants. I have studied what my friend, the late Edward A. Freeman, called Eng lish People in its Three Homes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Stories From American History The object of this little book is to interest children in the history of their country. No attempt is made to give a connected or consecutive record, but rather to relate a number of striking incidents and to arouse the desire for an acquaintance with the full story of the greatest land on which the sun ever shone. Since the volume is intended for quite young pupils, the language is simple and direct, and it is believed that everything is told in a way that will not only interest and be understood, but will be in structive to the boys and girls not yet old enongh to take up a regular course in the study of history. Excerpt from Stories of Early American History For children of tender years, the material must not only be concrete and colorful, but it must also be presented in language so simple that the thought can be easily grasped. If the author has succeeded in this twofold purpose, Stories of Early American History should fulfil its mission. It is hoped that the fine illustrations and the attractive typographical features of the book will help in bringing vividly before the child's mind the events recounted in the text. Another aid in making the stories real will, it is intended, be found in Some Things to Think About. These and similar questions, which will suggest themselves to the teacher, will doubtless serve to help the child in Vitalizing the life of the past and connecting it with the present and his own life. In conclusion, I wish to acknowledge my deep obliga tion to Mr. Forrest Morgan, of the Watkinson Library, Hart ford, and to Miss Elizabeth P. Peck, of the Hartford Public High School, both of whom have read the manuscript and have made many valuable suggestions and criticisms. Excerpt from Stories of Great Americans: For Little Americans The primary aim of this book is to furnish the little learner reading matter that will excite his attention and give him pleasure, and thus make lighter the difficult task of learning to read. The ruggedness of this task has often been increased by the use of disconnected sentences, or lessons as dry and uninteresting as finger exercises on the piano. It is a sign of promise that the demand for reading matter of interest to the child has come from teachers. I have endeavored to meet this requirement in the following stories. As far as possible the words chosen have been such as are not difficult to the little reader, either from their length or their unfamiliarity. The sentences and paragraphs are short. Learning to read is like climbing a steep hill, and it is a great relief to the panting child to find frequent breathing places. It is one of the purposes of these stories to make the mind of the pupil familiar with some of the leading figures in the history of our country by means of personal anecdote. Some of the stories are those that every American child ought to know, because they have become a kind of national folklore. Such, for example, are "Putnam and the Wolf" and the story of "Franklin's Whistle." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
