On the bicentennial of Hans Christian Andersen’s birth, this collection takes Andersen out of the nursery and places him squarely in the literary pantheon. While Andersen’s tales continue to seize the imagination with their singular blend of simplicity, eccentricity, and charm, English-language readers have until now had to content themselves with inaccurate retellings and inadequate translations. Diana Crone Frank, a Danish novelist and linguist, and Jeffrey Frank, a novelist and editor at the New Yorker, offer a much-needed modern translation. Hans Christian Andersen (1805-75) is perhaps Denmark's best known author. A prolific writer of plays, novels, travel books, and an autobiography, he is mainly remembered for his 156 fairy tales and stories, among them "The Little Mermaid," "The Ugly Duckling," and "The Emperor's New Clothes." Andersen was born and raised in Odense, the only child of a poor washerwoman and shoemaker. He received little formal education, but drew upon his early experiences and observations in his literary work. He once wrote: "Most of what I have written is a reflection of myself. Every character is from life. I know and have known them all." Andersen's stories have been translated into more than 100 languages. This early-20th century edition presents several of his stories in English. Edmund Dulac (1882-1953) was born in Toulouse, France, and moved to London in 1904, where he specialized in illustrating children's books. His other works included The Arabian Nights (1907) and Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales from the Old French (1910).

She managed to capture the public’s imagination with her delicate and ethereal illustrations. They most commonly featured subtle yet bold washes of colour, with few of the thick black outlines so common in other illustrations of the day. Vibrant colours and Art Deco patterns full of energy and emotion characterise Harbour’s work.
