Excerpt from Stories of Great Artists IN trying to interest the children of our own school in some of the world' s great pictures and the artists who painted them, we felt the need of reading material on the subject. We searched for it, but found nothing that could be put into the hands of young children. The sketches contained in this book were then written. The lessons given are intended for supplementary reading in the third and fourth grades. We suggest that picture study precede the reading in class of each sketch. The abundance of good copies of the masterpieces of art, which may be obtained at a very small price, makes the accomplishment of this easy. A. Picture never fails to arouse the interest of a child. Through good pictures he may be taught to recognize and appreciate the beautiful in art.
