Excerpt from Stories of Old Greece "There is an instinct in the human heart Which makes all fables it has coined - To justify the reign of its belief, And strengthen it by beauty's right divine - Veil in their inner cells a mystic gift, Which, like the hazel twig in faithful hands, Points surely to the hidden springs of truth." Aside from their use as a means of strengthening the imagination, the myths embody ethical truths, which are helpful just in proportion to the intellectual activity which the stories arouse. The child lover will seek for the best means in accomplishing her end, - the harmonious culture of the child. In all that she does, she will be governed by the purest motives. The telling of a story has a broader meaning than that of entertainment. Its real motive is the making of what the child loves a means by which he may be led to a clearer understanding of his own powers and possibilities, and of his relations to others. Excerpt from Old Greek Stories: Third Reader Grade Perhaps no other stories have ever been told so often or listened to with so much pleasure as the classic tales of ancient Greece. For many ages they have been a source of delight to young people and old, to the ignorant and the learned, to all who love to hear about and contemplate things mysterious, beautiful, and grand. They have become so incorporated into our language and thought, and so interwoven with our literature, that we could not do away with them now if we would. They are a portion of our heritage from the distant past, and they form perhaps as important a part of our intellectual life as they did of that of the people among whom they originated. Excerpt from Stories of Old Greece and Rome Of the life that was lived among the dwellers on Olympus, not even the poets could claim to know; but sometimes a tired soldier dozing by his camp fire dreamed dreams of this wonderful country where the immortal gods walked by night and day; and sometimes a lonely fisherman, looking across the blue waters of the Mediterranean to the crimsoning sunset, saw visions of youth and beauty and life that lasted for ever and ever and ever. It was long before the memory Of man that the gods first came to live on Mount Olympus, and it was still longer ago that all the great powers of the uni verse fought with each other for the right to rule the world. In this mighty war, which rent the very heavens with the crash of battle, Jupiter at last conquered all his jealous enemies, and made himself ruler of the gods and of the world.1 On that day he established his dwelling place on Mount Olympus, and set the earth below him for a footstool. From his throne in the high heavens he looked down upon the kingdoms that he had portioned out to each of his brothers; and he saw Neptune, the god of the sea, driving through the waves his chariot drawn by huge, misshapen sea-beasts that beat up the thick white foam until it glistened on the sea king's beard and on his crown of shells and seaweed. The other kingdom was so far away that even the all-seeing eyes of Jupiter were strained to catch any glimpse of the shapes that moved noiselessly there, for this was the realm of Pluto, god of the under world, that dread country of darkness and unending gloom, where no ray of sunlight ever came, and where the sad spirits of the dead wept for the lost world of love and light and laughter. Excerpt from Old Greek Nature Stories Now, one of the most interesting things that these old Greeks have left to us is the wonderful collection Of stories which grew up and were handed down among them from generation to generation, from a time long before the art of writing was invented, until at last they were written down, and so saved from being forgotten. Most of these were in the fom' of poetry, and in that form they have come down to us. Since, as we have seen, the modern world owes so much to this famous nation, it is fitting that we should know something Of what they thought, and in what way they regarded the world around them; and one of the best ways Of getting this knowledge is through the wonderful stories in which they delighted. Excerpt from Myths of Old Greece: In Story and Song At the same time, care has been taken not to burden the pupils. The book is distinctively a reader. It demands no committing to memory, and there is very little to be carried on from story to story. Unessential names and incidents, though necessary in a. Compendium, are here omitted, and it is thought that the stories will require little more mental labor than that of the mere reading. Excerpt from The Golden Fleece: More Old Greek Stories To the lad Cretheus, the youngest of the sons of olus, all this seemed unbearable. He missed the friends of former days. He missed their loving service. He shrank before the cold' looks and harsh words that greeted him day by day. At length he said to his brother the king: I have no longer a home. I would rather go out into the great woods and live with the wild things there than dwell in this cheerless place. The face of Athamas grew black with anger, and he answered: Begone, and be it so! Go, live With the wild things, and let not to-morrow's sun see you Within the city walls. The young prince had no mind to disobey. At the break Of day he set out, to journey he knew not whither. With a stout stick in his hand and his father's sword by his side, he went forth to seek his fortune among strangers. Yet no fear had he of the end, for in those early days no man nor boy knew What fear was. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Children of the Dawn: Old Tales of Greece The aim of this volume is to present, in a form suitable for young readers, a small selection from the almost inexhaustible treasure-house of the ancient Greek tales, which abound (it is needless to say) in all Greek poetry, and are constantly referred to by the prose-writers. These stories are found, whether narrated at length, or sometimes only mentioned in a cursory and tantalising reference, from the earliest poets, Homer and Hesiod, through the lyric age, and the Attic renaissance of the fifth century, when they form the material of the tragic drama, down to the second century B.C., when Apollodorus, the Athenian, grammarian, made a prose collection of them, which is invaluable. They reappear at Rome in the Augustan age (and later), in the poems of Vergil, Ovid, and Statius - particularly in Ovid's "Metamorphoses." Many more are supplied by Greek or Roman travellers, scholars, geographers, or historians, of the first three centuries of our era, such as Strabo, Pausanias, Athenæus, Apuleius and Ælian. The tales are various - stories of love, adventure, heroism, skill, endurance, achievement or defeat. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
