Excerpt from East Rock Park at New Haven, Conn: Illustrated in Photo-Gravure In the winter of 1823 the dead body of E'ias Turner was found on the summit of the Rock, in a rude but he had himself built, and which had afforded him shelter through many previous winter storms. Tradition says he had been crossed in love, and becoming a misanthropic, secluded himself from his kind, led a wild and precarious life on the Rock, and was scarcely ever known to speak 'to a human creature. He was succeeded as monarch of the Rock by a squatter named Hubbell, who is still remembered by many old residents of New Haven as an eccentric character, making a meagre living by the sale of wood, which he hauled from the Rock and through the streets of the City by a goat team. Excerpt from A Modern History of New Haven and Eastern New Haven County, Vol. 1 Eaton wasted no time. Leaving a few squatters, as it were, for the perilous task of holding the ground until he could return with the larger party, he sailed back to Boston. It seems to have been no twenty-four hour trip from New Haven to Boston in those days for it was impossible to get the party back before winter - which was as well for their health, no doubt. New Haven climate, as we may know, is more favorably introduced with spring than with winter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from History of the City of New York, Vol. 2 of 3: Its Origin, Rise, and Progress; Containing Over Three Hundred Superb Illustrations It has been my intention to collect under one view the almost count less authorities from which I have derived aid. But the extreme dim culty of assigning a proper measure to such catalogue, and the absolute want of space for its insertion, deprive me of the coveted pleasure. It would be useful to the student; and yet it would give a totally inade quate notion of the vast extent of the field in which I have been gleaning. Some of the choicest links in my chain have been found in the most out of-the-way places among seared and yellow letters written by actors in the great events narrated, in old sermons, records of trials, wills, genealogical manuscripts; documents, and pamphlets; while concerning certain matters tinged with ambiguity and uncertainty, I have discovered extraordinary and unique sources of authentic information outside of the city and State.
