I twice stood for Parliament as an independent candidate for Brighton Pavilion at the general elections of 2015 and 2017. My book, entitled "Storming the Barricades", is a memoir of those two elections, and espouses my vision for a dynamic, socially just, enterprise society, a genuine meritocratic alternative to feudal Toryism, and the poverty of aspiration of state socialism. The book is entitled "Storming the Barricades." The title is inspired by the notion of the UK storming the barricades of global trade, and during my two general election campaigns as an Independent candidate for Brighton Pavilion, as an insurgent storming the barricades of the political establishment. It also originates from a phrase I coined when warning against isolationism in the UK's post Brexit foreign policy. Namely, that after Brexit, the UK must not retreat from Fortress Europe to hide behind the barricades of Fortress Britain. I stood as an Independent as I believed that in 2015 and 2017 that none of the parties were offering a vision of a country where our own young people have the skills to succeed in the global marketplace, that liberates the entrepreneur from the shackles of the state, and of a confident, outward looking UK playing a vital role overseas, bringing an end to the war in Syria, curbing Russian aggression, and strengthening our own defences at all levels. Had I been elected an MP, I was determined to use the situation of a hung Parliament to work with MPs across the party divide divide to pass legislation which would realise this vision.Storming the Barricades commences in the immediate aftermath of the EU referendum, and the subsequent seismic shift of the political landscape, through to the election of Donald Trump, the 2017 UK general election, in which I stood as an Independent Candidate in Brighton Pavilion for the second time. The present time is particularly apposite for publication of this book, with the Brussels Summit in March 2018. The book also describes my political activities in between the EU referendum and the 2017 general election, including being interviewed in December, 2016, by Stu Taylor of Money Matters about Brexit and foreign policy, and articles published by Vox Ukraine about the situation covering Russia and Ukraine, and by Brexit Central about UK foreign policy post Brexit.
