Over the more than three decades of my life as a physician, I have been constantly amazed at how subtle and elegant nature is as a teacher. Our questions to her, though, must be clear and unambiguous. Otherwise, the answers we receive are likely to be misleading and confusing. As I have matured as a clinician, I have tried to improve my questions to increase my chances of receiving an answer. For the past decade, I have been pondering the subject of strabismus with which I have busied myself for practically two and one-half decades. I began to realize that my time, my share of wisdom, my abilities to carry out the prodigious work necessary to create a book out of nothing but thought, reading, and reflection on the work of others, as well as my own experience, were perhaps becoming limited. I do not doubt that they will become even more limited! Thus I have been led to write this book. Further, I am left in greater awe of prolific writers, particu larly those who write with the precision and attention to detail necessary for a medical text. Let me warn the reader at the outset that my approach in this book is "teleologi cal. " I am well aware of the conflict between science's notion of causality as only local and instrumental as opposed to the anthropomorphic notion of purpose or design in nature implied by the choice of this teleology.

A comprehensive review of visual impairment in children and possible solutions The rising number of cases in visual disorders during development, over the last decade, has strongly influenced approaches to diagnosis and rehabilitation. Moreover, the study of visual function has evolved not only within an ophthalmological, but also a neurodevelopmental framework: advances in our understanding of the maturation and plasticity of visual system functioning have further guided the progress of such approaches. As a result, the key importance of the developmental age is now widely acknowledged, from as early as the first months of life. This book provides an overview of the diagnosis and treatment of visual disorders in relation to advances in neurodevelopmental studies. The concept of early and multimodal management is discussed, with a focus on neuro-psycho-ophthalmological issues. The need for training courses aimed at updating semiological aspects and methodological and rehabilitative strategies is established, as being of significant value to clinical practice. 4 parts: General overviewCerebral visual impairments: from diagnosis to rehabilitationRehabilitation of visual impairmentsVisual disorders and neurological diseases

This volume brings together work from leading researchers in the fields of developmental disorders of binocular vision, strabismus, and both infantile and acquired forms of nystagmus. It contains four sections. The first section, Basic Concepts of Stable Vision and Gaze, deals with psychophysical aspects of infantile forms of nystagmus and the relative contributions of extraocular proprioception and efference (corollary discharge). It also contains an accessible review of current notions of spatial and temporal visual functions and spatial constancy in infantile nystagmus syndrome and latent nystagmus. The second section, New Models and Techniques for Studying Gaze Stability, reviews animal and development models for strabismus, amblyopia, and nystagmus. It also contains novel optical methods for managing the visual consequences of nystagmus and a study of the potential ill effects of video displays on children's response to near viewing. The third section, New Therapies for Congenital Nystagmus, presents basic genetic studies and clinical trials of drug and surgical treatment of those patients with infantile forms of nystagmus. The final section,General Aspects of Normal and Abnormal Gaze Control, pulls together a range of contributions dealing with normal gaze control, infantile nystagmus, and acquired disorders of eye movements, including new treatment measures. This book will be a valuable resource for all scientists and practitioners interested in developmental disorders of vision.
