Efficient and effective transportation networks are backbones to modern societies. Methodologically, their design has mainly been driven by optimization approaches oftentimes with a strong cost focus. Their strategic planning, however, should go beyond detailed cost analysis and identify other key decision drivers. Transportation network centrality describes the appearance of a network; hence is crucial for network design. Anne Paul develops a strategic approach to transportation network design by conceptualizing transportation network centrality and relating it to the performance and quality of transportation networks. Consequently, the concept of network centrality serves to support decisions in strategic network design. A practical implementation of this approach is provided, demonstrating its feasibility. Potential readers include scholars and practitioners from logistics, supply chain management, and operational research with an interest in strategic transportation network design.

This title was first published in 2002. This innovative work analyses how the United States has laid down the foundations for global power. It reassesses and re-evaluates the declinist-renewal argument and challenges conventional balance of power theories, demonstrating how the United States is attempting to ’hegemonically globalise’ the entire international system. To evaluate the success of hegemonic globalisation, the book analyses four major powers and regions - Russia, the People’s Republic of China (PRC), the European Union (EU), and Japan - and their historical, political, economic, cultural and geopolitical relations with the United States. Each study examines the tangible and intangible sources of their relationship, and the possible tensions and resistance towards United States hegemony therein. Providing much-needed insight and a fresh perspective, this book makes a worthwhile contribution to our understanding of contemporary international power.

Over the last number of years there has been a growing interest in the analysis of complex networks which describe a wide range of real-world systems in nature and society. Identification of the central elements in such networks is one of the key research areas. Solutions to this problem are important for making strategic decisions and studying the behavior of dynamic processes, e.g. epidemic spread. The importance of nodes has been studied using various centrality measures. Generally, it should be considered that most real systems are not homogeneous: nodes may have individual attributes and influence each other in groups while connections between nodes may describe different types of relations. Thus, critical nodes detection is not a straightforward process. New Centrality Measures in Networks presents a class of new centrality measures which take into account individual attributes of nodes, the possibility of group influence and long-range interactions and discusses all their new features. The book provides a wide range of applications of network analysis in several fields – financial networks, international migration, global trade, global food network, arms transfers, networks of terrorist groups, and networks of international journals in economics. Real-world studies of networks indicate that the proposed centrality measures can identify important nodes in different applications. Starting from the basic ideas, the development of the indices and their advantages compared to existing centrality measures are presented. Features Built around real-world case studies in a variety of different areas (finance, migration, trade, etc.) Suitable for students and professional researchers with an interest in complex network analysis Paired with a software package for readers who wish to apply the proposed models of centrality (in Python) available at https://github.com/SergSHV/slric.

"Culturally institutionalized rights for women, meaningful participation in domestic and world affairs, and protection during and after armed conflict are foundational to achieving international peace and security. The US must begin to demonstrably pursue its whole WPS strategy through deliberate implementation. Air War College (AWC) is uniquely positioned to be a DoD pathfinder and must lead by migrating WPS philosophy from elective status into core AWC curricula on leadership, strategy, security, and warfighting. This paper first establishes the centrality of WPS to the successful pursuit of global security. It then surveys US guidance and activity that over the past 20 years has in many respects broken barriers and blazed a trail for the world. It then turns a critical eye toward challenging WPS elements that have failed to gain traction and continue to await meaningful action. Next, it articulates why Air War College is the best place to invigorate this critical institutional shift, offering three practical examples in current courses where WPS can integrate as foundational strategic thought without disrupting or overburdening existing curricula. Finally, it considers 2 some common sources of hesitancy and even aversion to both WPS writ large and to mainstreaming implementation and offers counterpoints."--pages 1-2

International trade is a key dimension of the world economy, it is a critical factor in raising living standards, increasing employment, and providing a larger variety of goods to consumers around the world. Despite the strong focus that international trade research has received in theoretical terms, the empirical aspects of trade are less clear and justify further research. In this context, it is essential for studies to focus on shedding light on the most important methods used to evaluate the multiple dimensions of trade within this international context. Trade has a myriad of direct and indirect effects, therefore touching several fields of research, including economics, management, finance, international relations, political science, and sociology, which makes it essential to explore. The Handbook of Research on the Empirical Aspects of Strategic Trade Negotiations and Management provides a systematic overview of the latest trends in the empirical analysis of trade from international perspectives. It provides a survey on the methods used to evaluate a specific topic in international trade, enhance knowledge about the multiple facets of international trade around the world, and grant in-depth surveys of previous empirical findings on specific topics in international trade. Important topics covered within this book include trade diversification, regional centrality, ethical pricing, globalization, cultural impacts, and open economies. This book is a valuable reference tool for government officials, policy makers, managers, executives, economists, practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, academicians, and students.
