While the big, multinational investment banks that were at the heart of this crisis were hit most severely, with players such as Lehman Brothers Inc. among others disappearing from the financial landscape, retail banks - institutions primarily engaged in the standard banking business with private customers - also suffered considerably from the global collapse of financial markets.1 Unlike their multinational counterparts, however, retail banks cannot rely on profitable mergers and acquisition activities or proprietary trading to boost income once the economy picks up again. While the challenges created by the Great Recession for retail banks are complex, they are not the only threat to longrun profitability. In many markets - especially in the mature western European ones, other dark clouds appear on the horizon. To name only a few, plummeting sales, narrowing profit margins, consumers' lack of confidence in the banking system and operational cost problems threaten retail banks in mature markets such as Germany.2 Postbank, a major German retail bank with a strong domestic customer base is one of the players that have to make strategic adjustments to cope with a changing economic landscape. But what will these strategic adjustments be - and in which priority do they need to be undertaken? Although literature on the financial crisis and expected changes in banking industry is paramount, so far little attention has been given to showing how strategy in the retail banking segment in the distinct geographic location of Germany will have to look like for a specific player in the post financial crisis era.

The consequences were stricter financial regulations introduced by Basel III and banks were forced to reduce proprietary trading and to refocus on traditional core banking business. Today supervisory authorities require sufficient and appropriate risk management systems to ensure financial stability and thus the internal operational complexity has increased and generates additional costs. In the aftermath of the financial crisis some banks are still struggling to regain competitiveness in combination with diminishing margins. In particular those banks are challenged with high dependency from interest income by deposit-financed retail banking business. In recent years financial technology companies, commonly known as FinTech, gained more importance in the financial industry and challenge banks and established business models. Digitisation is advancing in all industries and the music and media industry has already experienced a painful transformation process and a similar development is expected as well for the financial industry. Depending on how revolutionary the technological innovation is the more intense will be the impact on business models and in consequence fast adaptability is essential. The level of activity within FinTech is enormous at the moment in Germany and over one hundred new companies were launched in 2014. As a consequence digital business models are analysed with respect to core competences and how FinTech generates benefits for customers by improving the value with innovative digital solutions.

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Within the last few years, dramatic changes took and still take place in the retail banking business. On the supply-side competition for cooperative banks is increasing due to various reasons. New competitors with different business models have entered the market. There is no doubt that they pose a serious threat to cooperative universal banks (which were the focus of this dissertation) and whose market share is declining constantly. Furthermore, non-banks and near-banks have to be considered in this respect, too, as these entities' business models are increasingly targeting customers of universal banks. On the demand side, changing customer behavior has accelerated transformation processes in recent years. An increased willingness to change suppliers can be noticed as consumers are placing more and more importance on price. A strong price awareness is changing market conditions in many business sectors in Germany. Decreasing customer loyalty forces universal banks to push sales activities and to intensify their personal relationship with the customer. The main objectives of this dissertation are the following: Work out a strategy within today s typical structure as a universal bank. Identify key success factors and evaluate this strategy for its chances for success. Derive the consequences for the future business model of a cooperative bank. Determine the change steps necessary to strengthen the competitiveness. Furthermore, the prerequisites of such a change process will have to be worked out. An inductive approach was chosen to achieve the aims of this thesis (Gill & Johnson). Firstly, an in-depth analysis of existing literature was carried out in order to gain an overview on current developments such as a) customer behaviour, and b) the competitive situation of the financial services sector. The results were to produce not only an explanation for current trends but also allow the prediction of future trends over the course of the next years. The environment in which cooperative banks are operating was described in detail. This approach provides a good basis to identify the relevant factors and to work out the necessary consequences for cooperative banks. In order to examine possible conclusions, interviews with 12 experts in the field were conducted. If failing to act on these problems, the future of many German retail banks seems jeopardized. Other industries, in particular the manufacturing sector, have faced similar problems. In the 1980's German manufacturing companies had to cope with similar challenges and managed to successfully overcome their crisis by developing and applying new concepts such as process management, focussing on core competencies and involving external providers into their operations. In the light of this success story, industrialization appears to be a very promising mean to respond to the current situation the German retail banks are facing. While foreign institutes have already initiated successful industrialization activities it has only recently come to the attention of German retail banks. This paper will therefore examine whether and how industrialization concepts can be successfully transferred and applied to German retail banks.

Despite all these improvements in our everyday life, the financial retail banking industry has remained relatively constant, even though it caused people to adapt to new circumstances, in the form of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), resulting in a Global Recession and higher regulations for the industry. Since then, the industry missed the opportunity to regain the customers’ trust by changing their habits and improving their services. Instead, customers are increasingly unlikely to buy products or refer their bank but are increasingly prepared to leave their bank within the next six months. This state of stagnancy inside the financial retail banking industry seems to have changed. New entrants have caused uproar in the industry. Fintechs, an acronym for financial technology, are entering the retail market, forcing banks to adapt and innovate. Online and mobile banking services are now considered to be the future of financial retail banking. Fintechs threaten to take away customers by offering better and cheaper services with higher usability. As both the number of Fintechs and their customers increase, banks realize that Fintechs are going to be a threat for them.

Indeed, rankings of developed nations along profitability indicators place Germany at the end of the scale. Critics attribute that situation mainly to the German banking system being overbanked and overbranched. The purpose of this paper is to analyze that notion and to examine the German market and competitive landscape of the retail banking industry. The analysis contains four sections. The first section compares profitability ratios and indicators of German banks to their peers' performances. The study produces surprising results. Despite the ostensibly high branch density, Germany's banks operate very cost efficiently. Yet it is their inability to generate sufficient income that results in the sluggish net earnings. Consequently, in the second section, the authors examine the German banking system and portray and compare its peculiarities in order to find out if the income problems are inherent to the system. More than in any other country, public banks dominate the market and, together with the cooperative banks, do not follow the economic principle of profit maximization. Moreover, the public banks have also received unjust government subsidies in the form of the maintenance and guarantee obligations. Thus, one presumes that private German banks operate in a very difficult system. The third section then takes a closer look at the market and analyzes the bank density, branch density and competition which the system produces. Over the last four years, more than 50,000 German bank employees lost their jobs and aggregate debt write-downs in the German banking market added up to 100 billion euros. Yet, these four problem-stricken years witnessed one of the biggest success stories in German banking, namely the rise of ING-DiBa to become Germany's fourth largest retail bank with over four million customers. This paper is a case study on ING-DiBa that attempts to explore its internal and external success factors. We find that information technology has enabled ING-DiBa to implement a consistent business model which German competitors find almost impossible to imitate. Its consistent business model is built on offering a very limited number of aggressively priced products through direct channels, highly standardized processes, automated customer interfaces and very strong branding. Given the immense success of ING-DiBa's plain cost-leadership strategy, we perceive the German retail banking market as an interesting example of how technology can force open encrusted market structures.
