Foreword Since the first studies by Bower and Burgelman in the early 1980’s on the phenomenon of strategic initiatives, the use of strategic initiatives in the strategic management of diversified organizations now is omnipresent. Strategic initiatives are seen as efficient answers of management teams for pressing challenges. By making use of strategic initiatives, managers can proceed flexibly and with entrepreneurial vigor from broad ideas toward specific commitments. Managing initiatives is perceived as a complex challenge by most managers. Empirical studies show that about 70% of all strategic initiatives fail to reach their goals. This statistic shows us, that successful management and implementation of strategic initiatives requires a multitude of diverse managerial skills. To date, the complexity of strategic initiatives is most often not fully taken into account in strategic management research. Almost all studies investigating strategic initiatives have concentrated either on the external or internal organizational context or have solely identified contextual factors that undermine the successful implementation of strategic initiatives. This underscores the fact that most prior research on the relationship between the organizational context and strategic initiatives is too narrow and suggests the need for a more holistic approach.

Strategic initiative implementation has evolved in recent years as a new and progressive form of strategy making. In this regard, strategic initiative implementation constitutes one of the central topics of strategic management regarding how firms can renew their most valuable sources of competitive advantage: the firm's idiosyncratic resources and knowledge base. Strategic management concepts and practical guidelines are still lacking on how strategic initiative implementation affects a company's idiosyncratic resources and knowledge base and what kinds of challenging effects may evolve during the strategic initiative implementation. Therefore, the aim of this book is to enhance our understanding of how strategic initiative implementation affects a firm's most valuable sources of competitive advantage and how thinking in strategic initiatives changes the thinking of traditional strategic Management disciplines. The book proposes a new way of strategy making concepts through proposing a new theory that depicts the dysfunctional effects of strategic initiative implementation. New thoughts are proposed to enhance a firm's existing core capabilities in the context of strategic initiative implementation and the interactions between ongoing initiatives. Furthermore, the book highlights the role and value of strategic initiative related dynamic capabilities. New insights into the challenges and limitations of extending and recombining the emerging knowledge bases from ongoing initiatives depict the evolution of dysfunctional knowledge. This book is a valuable source for both, practitioner and scholars to enhance their daily work and thoughts.

The Focused Organization written by Antonio Nieto-Rodriguez and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-16 with Business & Economics categories.

In The Focused Organization Antonio Nieto-Rodriguez shows you how fewer, more effectively elected and managed projects are the key to strategic and long-term success. Using his own research and work experience he explains how and why those organizations that focus on just a few key initiatives can perform significantly better than unfocused organizations, not only financially but also in achieving their strategic objectives and motivating their staff. The author introduces a new way of looking at a company through two very different and often conflicting dimensions: running-the-business and changing-the-business. What you add to one dimension you have to subtract from the other one. Finding the right balance between these two dimensions represents one of the major challenges to successful strategy execution. Becoming a focused organization involves a radical change in the way companies are organized and the way they select and manage projects - the creation of a new culture. The Focused Organization discusses the characteristics that comprise a focused organization. It describes key areas where a focused organization builds its levels of maturity; provides examples of focused organizations that outperform the rest; and explains in practical steps how all enterprises can become focused. The book finishes with a unique and inspiring case study that transports us to the early days of the current business world. Through the main character, Benny White, we learn how a business was conducted and how management evolved over decades with the introduction of business theories, including project management.

Strategy Journeys written by David Booth and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-09-14 with Business & Economics categories.

Strategy Journeys starts from the premise that strategic planning suffers from a bad press: it can be seen as complex, technical, remote from the day-to-day reality of an organisation, undertaken by an elite specialist executive group, producing threatening changes whose rationale is barely understood – or, perhaps worse still, having no worthwhile impact at all. For many senior executives, strategic planning is too daunting a task, which is why they often seek help from those with the expertise to guide the process: they have a severe lack of confidence in their own ability to design, plan and implement such an important and major project. Yet organisations have never had greater need for a flexible, resilient and engaging approach to strategic planning than now. How do those leading an organisation know where to start, what approach to take and how to go about the process of strategic planning? David Booth aims to help them by demystifying the concept and propounding a ‘first principles’ approach to developing a strategic plan within the context of the individual organisation and with the flexibility to adapt the process to focus on what really matters. He suggests the key questions that should be asked when considering embarking on a strategic planning ‘journey’ to help design and guide the process.

For many businesses today, generally only two things are certain: greater uncertainty and an accelerated pace of change. Globalization increases the scope of competition. Digitization hastens the pace of business. Customers are more empowered than ever before. A two-speed economy -- rapid growth in emerging markets, slowing growth in developed markets -- means that companies must execute in an increasingly complex world. In this environment, the ability to develop and implement new strategic initiatives and change gears rapidly is becoming a key differentiator. A program or project management office (PMO) can play a crucial role in helping enable this by actively supporting the implementation of key strategic programs. However, the role of the PMO within the company must, in turn, become more strategic, and it must develop its capabilities accordingly. (Organizations use a range of terminology to describe their PMOs; in this article, PMO refers to an enterprise-level unit that works on a portfolio of strategic initiatives across the organization.)
