Complex Strategic Choices provides clear principles and methods which can guide and support strategic decision to face modern challenges. Contending perspectives on the future of US grand strategy. More than a decade has passed since the end of the Cold War, but the United States has yet to reach a consensus on a coherent approach to the international use of American power. The essays in this volume present contending perspectives on the future of U.S. grand strategy. U.S. policy options include primacy, cooperative security, selective engagement, and retrenchment. This revised edition includes additional and more recent analysis and advocacy of these options. The volume includes the Clinton administration's National Security Strategy for a New Century, the most recent official statement of American grand strategy, so readers can compare proposed strategies with the official U.S. government position.

All organizations recognise the importance of strategy creation and execution: strategy is the process of developing the corporate future. Unfortunately, it often doesn't generate the required results. This book presents a new 8-step process for creating a strategy that really delivers. For each step, the book describes the key parts of the process, shows how to avoid the potential pitfalls, and points to the most useful strategic models and frameworks. Readers can see the process in action by following the intriguing case study that unfolds throughout the book. One of the critical determinants of strategic success is to see strategy not just as planning but as a process that involves dialogues with multiple stakeholders, both within and outside the company. This concept is integrated into every phase of the 8-step approach and is at the heart of its effectiveness in creating strategy that delivers in practice.

Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, Reutlingen University, language: English, abstract: At some point in time, business students around the world will most likely be confronted with the famous product and industry life cycle. This tool is mainly used as a marketing instrument. It offers advertising and investment directions for each of the three to five stages of the cycle. Everything in this theory seems obvious and clear, until the "decline" stage of the cycle is reached. The question is, is there really only one option, namely to harvest and then divest, in the last phase of the life cycle? Is the decrease in revenues and profits inevitable? The past shows that this is not necessarily the case. Some companies actually did generate profits and proved to be quite successful in a difficult market environment. Take for example the fountain pen maker Mont Blanc. The market for fountain pens has been declining for decades due to technological change (invention of typewriters and computers) and also consumer preferences. However, Mont Blanc has set up a selective shrinkage ("niche") strategy by attracting high-income professionals and promoting their fountain pens as a luxury good. As a result, the company has achieved stable revenues and high margins within a declining industry (Grant 2010). In the following, this paper will examine what a declining industry is, what characteristics a declining industry shows and what strategic options companies within such an industry environment have.
