Enterprise Architecture, Integration, and Interoperability and the Networked enterprise have become the theme of many conferences in the past few years. These conferences were organised by IFIP TC5 with the support of its two working groups: WG 5. 12 (Architectures for Enterprise Integration) and WG 5. 8 (Enterprise Interoperability), both concerned with aspects of the topic: how is it possible to architect and implement businesses that are flexible and able to change, to interact, and use one another’s s- vices in a dynamic manner for the purpose of (joint) value creation. The original qu- tion of enterprise integration in the 1980s was: how can we achieve and integrate - formation and material flow in the enterprise? Various methods and reference models were developed or proposed – ranging from tightly integrated monolithic system - chitectures, through cell-based manufacturing to on-demand interconnection of bu- nesses to form virtual enterprises in response to market opportunities. Two camps have emerged in the endeavour to achieve the same goal, namely, to achieve interoperability between businesses (whereupon interoperability is the ability to exchange information in order to use one another’s services or to jointly implement a service). One school of researchers addresses the technical aspects of creating dynamic (and static) interconnections between disparate businesses (or parts thereof).

Immer kürzere Lieferzeiten, bei schwankenden Absatzzahlen und kürzeren Produktlebenszyklen in Verbindung mit steigendem Entwicklungsaufwand sind das Ergebnis. Die Firmen verlagern dadurch zunehmend mehr Wertschöpfungsaufgaben an ihre Zulieferbetriebe, um sich stattdessen auf ihre Kernkompetenzen zu konzentrieren. Nach einer Delphi-Studie von 1998 lag der Eigenfertigungsanteil der Unternehmen bei 71% und für 2005 wurde eine Verringerung der Eigenfertigung auf 59% prognostiziert. Appelfeller und Buchholz belegen, dass 2005 sogar 70% der Wertschöpfung fremd bezogen wurden. Der Fremdbezug von ganzen Modulen wird vor allem in der Automobilindustrie erfolgreich durchgeführt. So werden beispielsweise die Beleuchtungskomponenten bei fast allen Automobilproduzenten komplett von einem Lieferanten Just-in-Time an das Band geliefert. Dieser Sachverhalt zeigt, dass durch verstärkte Auslagerung von Wertschöpfungsaktivitäten die Beziehung zum Zulieferer an Bedeutung gewinnt und damit auch an den Wertschöpfungserfolg gekoppelt ist. Gleichzeitig erhöht sich die Komplexität der fremd beschafften Teile, denn statt einzelne Teile zu zu kaufen, geht die Entwicklung hin zur Modul- und Systembeschaffung. Die Beschaffung stellt eine Schnittstelle zwischen Abnehmer und Lieferant dar und subsumiert alle Tätigkeiten, die eine wirtschaftliche Versorgung des Unternehmens mit den benötigten betrieblichen Faktoren sicherstellen. Nach einer Definition von Arnold umfasst Beschaffung demnach „sämtliche unternehmens- und/oder marktbezogenen Tätigkeiten, die darauf gerichtet sind, einem Unternehmen die benötigten, aber nicht selbst hergestellten Objekte verfügbar zu machen.“ Der Begriff des Beschaffungsmanagement ist gleichzusetzen mit dem Begriff der Beschaffung, wonach eine Definition für das Beschaffungsmanagement der oben genannten entspricht. Die strategische Dimension des Beschaffungsmanagements hat nach Boutellier und Locker hingegen erst mit der starken Reduktion der Fertigungstiefe und mit der Globalisierung an Bedeutung gewonnen. Dynamische Märkte verlangen nach einer schnellen Anpassung des Leistungsangebots der Unternehmen, die nur mittels des Lieferantenmarkts erfolgen kann. Durch die Zusammenarbeit mit qualifizierten Partnern, welchen die Unternehmen kritische Aufgaben übergeben, konzentrieren sich Unternehmen auf die Kernkompetenzen.
