Dies spiegelt sich vor allem seit den 90er Jahren in den Veränderungen der Wettbewerbsbedingungen durch Globalisierung und Deregulierung, rasante Entwicklung neuer Technologien, wie dem Internet, und die steigenden Kundenanforderungen durch individualisierte Kundenbedürfnisse wider. Durch die Globalisierung, insbesondere auch durch die zunehmende Harmonisierung in der Europäischen Union und dem damit einhergehenden Abbau von Handelsbarrieren, wächst die Anzahl der Wettbewerber, die durch Preissenkungen den Kostendruck auf die Unternehmen erhöhen. Um unternehmensinterne Optimierungen zu erreichen und somit unter diesen verschärften Wettbewerbsbedingungen konkurrenzfähig zu bleiben, werden Konzepte wie das Lean Management angewandt. Sind durch Konzepte zur unternehmensinternen Optimierung die Rationalisierungspotenziale annähernd erschöpft, ist es notwendig, diese in der überbetrieblichen Zusammenarbeit zu finden. Ein Management der unternehmensübergreifenden Wertschöpfungskette erweist sich daher als notwendig. Das Supply Chain Management könnte hierzu ein geeignetes Konzept darzustellen.
