Stratigraphy, a branch of geology, is the science of describing the vertical and lateral relationships of different rock formations formed through time to understand the earth history. These relationships may be based on lithologic properties (named lithostratigraphy), fossil content (labeled biostratigraphy), magnetic properties (called magnetostratigraphy), chemical features (named chemostratigraphy), reflection seismology (named seismic stratigraphy), age relations (called chronostratigraphy). Also, it refers to archaeological deposits called archaeological stratigraphy. Stratigraphy is built on the concept "the present is the key to the past" which was first outlined by James Hutton in the late 1700s and developed by Charles Lyell in the early 1800s. This book focuses particularly on application of geophysical methods in stratigraphic investigations and stratigraphic analysis of layered basin deposits from different geologic settings and present continental areas extending from Mexico region (north America) through Alpine belt including Italy, Greece, Iraq to Russia (northern Asia).

Stratigraphic analyses of layered deposits are described in this all-inclusive book. Stratigraphy is a geological sub-specialty which is defined as the science of describing the lateral and vertical relationships of distinct rock formations formed through time to comprehend the earth history. These interrelations might be the result of variety of factors including fossil content, magnetic properties, reflection seismology or archaeological deposits. Their study and analysis comprise of various sub-specialties of stratigraphy including lithostratigraphy, biostratigraphy, magnetostratigraphy, chemostratigraphy, seismic stratigraphy, chronostratigraphy and archaeological stratigraphy. During the late 1700s, James Hutton said -"the present is the key to the past," a concept further developed by Charles Lyell in the early 1800s. This has evolved as the basis on which stratigraphy has worked ever since. This book lays specific emphasis on applications of geophysical techniques in stratigraphic investigations and analysis of layered basin deposits from distinct geologic settings across continents ranging from Mexico region (North America) through the Alpine belt including Greece, Italy, and Iraq to Russia (Northern Asia).

The interest in seismic stratigraphic techniques to interpret reflection datasets is well established. The advent of sophisticated subsurface reservoir studies and 4D monitoring, for optimising the hydrocarbon production in existing fields, does demonstrate the importance of the 3D seismic methodology. The added value of reflection seismics to the petroleum industry has clearly been proven over the last decades. Seismic profiles and 3D cubes form a vast and robust data source to unravel the structure of the subsurface. It gets nowadays exploited in ever greater detail. Larger offsets and velocity anisotropy effects give for instance access to more details on reservoir flow properties like fracture density, porosity and permeability distribution, Elastic inversion and modelling may tell something about the change in petrophysical parameters. Seismic investigations provide a vital tool for the delineation of subtle hydrocarbon traps. They are the basis for understanding the regional basin framework and the stratigraphic subdivision. Seismic stratigraphy combines two very different scales of observation: the seismic and well-control. The systematic approach applied in seismic stratigraphy explains why many workers are using the principles to evaluate their seismic observations. The here presented modern geophysical techniques allow more accurate prediction of the changes in subsurface geology. Dynamics of sedimentary environments are discussed with its relation to global controling factors and a link is made to high-resolution sequence stratigraphy. ‘Seismic Stratigraphy Basin Analysis and Reservoir Characterisation’ summarizes basic seismic interpretation techniques and demonstrates the benefits of intergrated reservoir studies for hydrocarbon exploration. Topics are presented from a practical point of view and are supported by well-illustrated case histories. The reader (student as well as professional geophysicists, geologists and reservoir engineers) is taken from a basic level to more advanced study techniques. * Overview reflection seismic methods and its limitations.* Link between basic seismic stratigraphic principles and high resolution sequence stratigraphy.* Description of various techniques for seismic reservoir characterization and synthetic modelling.* Overview nversion techniques, AVO and seismic attributes analysis.

"Sedimentology and stratigraphy are covered in unprecedented depth in this updated and dynamic follow-up to 'Principles of sedimentology', regarded since its publication in 1978 as the definitive text in the field. Suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, this new text encompasses a contemporary global view of sedimentary deposits. The most recent data on such increasingly important topics as seismic stratigraphy and sequence stratigraphy, process sedimentology, facies patterns, extraterrestrial forcing functions, basin analysis, and plate tectonics are explored. The text's structure and organization accommodate a complete treatment of both sedimentology and stratigraphy and presents them in a historical context." --
