Street Addicts In The Political Economy written by Alisse Waterston and has been published by Temple University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997-04-22 with Business & Economics categories.

In this book, Alisse Waterston reveals the economic, political, and ideological forces that shape the nature of street-addict life. Disputing the view that hard-core, low-income drug users are social marginals situated in deviant subcultures, the author dispels popular images of the mythic, dark dope fiend haunting our city streets. Using dramatic, first-person accounts from New York City addicts, Waterston analyzes their position in the social structure, the kind of work -- both legal and illegal -- they perform, and their relations with family, friends, and lovers. She presents a moving account of daily life from the addict's point of view and demonstrates how addicts are structurally vulnerable to the larger sociocultural system within which they live.

The Book Street Addicts is a therapeutic memoir of street addiction. The use of the term "Street" is defined and displayed as a way of life and/or lifestyle. It's targeted to young adults and the like who are consciously and subconsciously addicted to cultural traits that are identified as a lifestyle and to defiant traits that are esteemed heroic and which glorify being "street," criminality and subcultures. Street-prone teens partake in lawlessness and the forbidden fruits that have become so rewarding that the behavior is now a dependence (The Addiction) causing our youth (The Addicts) to continuously live the street life (The Disorder), a condition characterized by patterns of thinking, personality and behavior that created an unhealthy compulsion to exist and belong. Across the United States, this teen hereditary or adopted lifestyle has become dangerously habitual-beyond the natural measure of control. This book describes the start, process and treatment; it provides everything it took for this bona fide street addict, as well as others, to recover from Street Addiction. This is our Streets Anonymous.

This book provides a new answer to the question, "Why do people use heroin and other street drugs?" Drawing upon a growing body of studies of drug users conducted by sociologists and anthropologists, it attempts to integrate their findings into a theoretically unified sociocultural explanation of heroin use. The theory, which draws heavily upon the insights of symbolic interactionist and role theory, posits that there is a street subculture of heroin users. The chief role in this subculture — the street addict role — becomes a blueprint for living for many heroin users. Addicts are heavily committed to this role and organize their behavior and self-identification around it. From this basic starting point, the theory explains how persons become and remain addicts and how they may eventually give up addictive behavior.

The Face Of Social Suffering written by Merrill Singer and has been published by Waveland Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-11-16 with Social Science categories.

This brief, compelling life story of a drug addict poses and answers questions of broad public concern about social responsibility, illicit drug use, hidden economies, and social inequality. Merrill Singer, a medical anthropologist involved in the public health impact of alcohol and illicit drug use, conducted interviews over a seven-year period with Tony, a street drug addict who grew up in the inner city. Tony learned the ways of using and selling drugs from his father, became an enforcer in a street gang, spent considerable time in prison, committed seemingly heartless, violent acts, and has had to struggle with the knowledge that he suffers from HIV infection. Tonys life story is an insider, personal view of a tumultuous, marginalized world that intertwines closely with the wider social milieu constructed and sustained by the U.S. political economy. Unique to this book is its attempt to understand the forces that contribute to the risky behavior of drug use, even at a time when drug users know about its deadly and damaging connection to diseases like HIV and hepatitis. Tonys story demonstrates that none of us make choices in a vacuum. Further, the book addresses important issues about how structures of social inequality in our society impact the lives and options of those at the bottom of the social ladder.
