Struggle For The Street written by Jessica D. Klanderud and has been published by UNC Press Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-03-15 with Social Science categories.

Cities are nothing without the streets—the arteries through which goods, people, and ideas flow. Neighborhood by neighborhood, block by block, the city streets are where politics begins. In Struggle for the Street, Jessica D. Klanderud documents the development of class-based visions of political, social, and economic equality in Pittsburgh's African American community between World War I and the early 1970s. Klanderud emphasizes how middle-class and working-class African Americans struggled over the appropriate uses and dominant meanings of street spaces in their neighborhoods as they collectively struggled to define equality. In chapters that move from one community to the next, Klanderud tracks the transformation of tactics over time with a streets-eye view that reveals the coalescing alliances between neighbors and through space. Drawing on oral histories of neighborhood residents, Black newspapers, and papers from the NAACP and Urban League, this study reveals complex class negotiations in the struggle for civil rights at the street level.

The city that never sleeps also never stops changing. And while New Yorkers are renowned for their trendsetting, this thought-provoking book argues that New York City itself has become a follower rather than a leader. Once-distinctive streets and neighborhoods have become awash in generic stores, apartment boxes, and garish signs and billboards. Legendary neighborhoods (Little Italy, Hell's Kitchen, Harlem, the Lower East Side) have been smoothed over with cute monikers, remade for real-estate investment and for sale to the highest bidder.

Turn Your Talents Into Profits written by Darcie Sanders and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Home-based businesses categories.

There seems to be no dearth of suggestions for making money at home, as the growing number of books devoted to the topic proves. But how many of these ideas are practical and creative at the same time? The experienced team of Sanders and Bullen not only describes more than 100 of the more unusual business vocations, but also interviews quite a few practitioners and lists specific resources to consult. Each entry includes a lengthy explanation of the job, and its duties and responsibilities, along with a top tip (e.g., for aspiring dog or cat breeders, it's suggested as an adjunct to other pet-related businesses, not as a solo venture), getting started, and the going rate. Sure to provoke chuckles are some of the recommendations, albeit all bona fide, such as a garden goosewear designer (yes, for concrete birds) and a beekeeper (no stings in this thought). Good information, well presented.

Planning With Neighborhoods written by William M. Rohe and has been published by UNC Press Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-01 with Political Science categories.

Neighborhood planning programs involve citizens in developing plans and self-help projects for their neighborhoods through local organizations. They also assist residents in reviewing projects developed by city agencies. Based on a survey of fifty-one neighborhood planning programs and in-depth case studies of Atlanta, Cincinnati, Houston, St. Paul, Wilmington, N.C., and Raleigh, Planning with Neighborhoods offers the first comprehensive description and evaluation of the effectiveness of these programs. Moving beyond theory, this study reviews the actual accomplishments and limitations of neighborhood planning programs and offers specific recommendations for designing a successful program. Included are a thorough history of neighborhood planning programs and an examination of the social, political, and planning theories that support their existence. Eight propositions on the benefits of a neighborood-based approach to planning are derived from this theory and evaluated on the basis of actual experience with this type of program. Speaking to both academics interested in neighborhood issues and planning practitioners, Planning with Neighborhoods concludes with recommendations for establishing effective neighborhood planning programs and improving existing programs.
