In Streetwise for Book Smarts, Celina Su examines the efforts of parents and students who sought to improve the quality of education in their local schools by working with grassroots organizations and taking matters into their own hands. In these organizations, everyday citizens pursued not only education reform but also democratic accountability and community empowerment. These groups had similar resources and operated in the same political context, yet their strategies and tactics were very different: while some focused on increasing state and city aid to their schools, others tried to change the way the schools themselves operated. Some coalitions sought accommodation with administrators and legislators; others did not.The events Su describes began with a series of stabbings in Bronx high schools during the 2003-2004 school year. After this rash of violence, several grassroots groups cited the need for additional safety patrols. Mothers from one school spoke of how they had previously protested until they got extra officers, a fairly scarce resource in New York public schools, at their local elementary school. Others asserted that not all the safety patrol officers already in place were treating students humanely. Parent organizations and school officials battled over who was to blame for the school violence. Did a police presence solve the problem, or did it exacerbate the schools' violence-prone conditions? Members of different groups proposed and mobilized behind a range of remedies. These divergent responses shed light on the ways in which the choices made by each organization mattered.By learning from Su's close observation of four activist groups in the Bronx, including Mothers on the Move and Sistas and Brothas United, we can better understand strategies that may ultimately lead to better and safer schools everywhere and help to revitalize American democracy.

(cont.) Through their cultural tool kits, the case study organizations attempt to mitigate three crucial tensions in their political strategies: the balance between pursuing collaborative strategies versus pursuing confrontational ones, the balance between focusing on strategies that aim for policy adoption versus ones that aim for policy formulation, and the balance between explicitly addressing issues of race in political campaigns versus building broad-based constituencies, sometimes at the expense of ignoring race-delineated issues.

Teen investors have powerful advantages over the rest of us. Many are whizzes at financial research on the Internet. They’re quick to master online stock trading. According to an August 2000 Wall Street Journal article, today more young Americans own investments than ever before, with 35 percent of eighth through twelfth graders owning stock or bonds, usually in a parent’s name, while about one-fifth own mutual funds. Often these teenage investors have amassed substantial nest eggs—even before they’ve finished high school. Although teen investors need adult cosigners for their brokerage and mutual fund custodial accounts, it’s not unusual for them to be the driving force behind their parents’ and relatives’ investment decisions. Now teens have another leg up—a book that explains the successes and investment strategies of real-life teen investors, along with the wisdom of Wall Street pros, and tips on how to make the most of the Web. The popularity of stock-picking contests and high school investment clubs—along with successful marketing vehicles, such as Stein Roe’s Young Investors Fund—have created a growing demand for investment information focused on teens, written for teens. Street Wise provides exactly what they want.

An essential addition to the street photography canon, this volume showcases hidden gems alongside many of street photography’s most famous images. Magnum photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson pioneered modern concepts of street photography before the term was even coined. A rich seam of street photography runs through the heart of Magnum to this day, both in the work of recognized masters of the genre—including Elliott Erwitt, Martin Parr, Bruce Gilden, and Richard Kalvar—and in the work of those who may not think of themselves as street photographers, despite their powerful influence on the current generation of budding artists. Magnum Streetwise is a true visual feast, interleaving insightful text and anecdotes within an intuitive blend of photographer- and theme-focused sections. Ambitious in scope and democratic in nature, Magnum Streetwise is an unmissable tour through the photographs and practices that have helped define what street photography is—and what it can be.

**TOP TEN BESTSELLER** 'I would rather read Colin Thubron than any other travel writer alive' John Simpson Mount Kailas is the most sacred of the world's mountains - holy to one fifth of humanity. Isolated beyond the central Himalayas, its summit has never been scaled, but for centuries the mountain has been ritually circled by Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims. Colin Thubron joins these pilgrims, after an arduous trek from Nepal, through the high passes of Tibet, to the magical lakes beneath the slopes of Kailas itself. He talks to secluded villagers and to monks in their decaying monasteries; he tells the stories of exiles and of eccentric explorers from the West. Yet he is also walking on a pilgrimage of his own. Having recently witnessed the death of the last of his family, his trek around the great mountain awakes an inner landscape of love and grief, restoring precious fragments of his own past.
