Unalloyed titanium wire and sheet samples, strengthened by the combined effects of interstitial content, grain refinement to approximately 0.5 microns and cold work have been subjected to a range of evaluation tests, in order to assess the extent to which the two-fold increase in room temperature strength attainable by submicron grain refinement and cold work is accompanied by changes in other mechanical properties. It is shown that the tensile strength is enhanced to roughly the same extent over the temperature range 77 - 550K but that the enhancement is lost at higher testing temperatures. Exposure to a temperatures of 673K also slowly degrades subsequent room temperature properties with about 1/2 the strength enhancement lost after 200 hours exposure. Improvements in fatigue properties (particularly high stress/low cycle fatigue) and increased resistance to stress corrosion cracking in an aggressive methanolic environment are found to accompany the strength enhancement. An increase in notch sensitivity (in comparison to conventional grain size unalloyed titanium) observed for the strengthened materials is not considered important since these materials continue to exhibit notch strength ratios of>1 for stress concentration factors up to 5.4. Experiments are described which were intended to elucidate the extent to which commercial purity titanium wire and sheet could be strengthened by the combined effects of interstitial content, grain size refinement and post recrystallization cold reduction. Procedures were developed which resulted in recrystallized grain sizes of the order of 0.5 microns. Two features found to be essential were cold reduction of at least 90% before recrystallization and the use of a rapid heat transfer technique (in this case molten lead annealing) for the recrystallization heat treatment. Grain refinement to this extent was found to lead to increases in strength (of up to 60 Ksi) and reduction in area at failure, accompanied by decreases (of up to a factor of two) in uniform elongation. The use of PRR was found to result in an additional strength increase (20-40 Ksi) and an additional uniform elongation decrease (a further factor of 2) with little effect on the reduction in area at failure. A program goal of a yield strength of 150 Ksi combined with adequate ductility was exceeded in the wire experiments but was not attained in the sheet experiments where difficulties were encountered in the achievement of the necessary initial 90% cold reduction. This book presents the most recent results in the area of bulk nanostructured materials and new trends in their severe plastic deformation (SPD) processing, where these techniques are now emerging from the domain of laboratory-scale research into the commercial production of various bulk nanomaterials. Special emphasis is placed on an analysis of the effect of nanostructures in materials fabricated by SPD on mechanical properties (strength and ductility, fatigue strength and life, superplasticity) and functional behavior (shape memory effects, magnetic and electric properties), as well as the numerous examples of their innovative applications. There is a high innovation potential for industrial applications of bulk nanomaterials for structural use (materials with extreme strength) as well as for functional applications such as nanomagnets, materials for hydrogen storage, thermoelectric materials, superconductors, catalysts, and biomedical implants.

Analysis Of Fracture Toughness Mechanism In Ultra Fine Grained Steels written by Toshihiro Hanamura and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-09-04 with Technology & Engineering categories.

In this book, advanced steel technologies mainly developed at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), Japan, for structure control, mechanical properties, and the related mechanisms are introduced and discussed. NIMS has long worked on developing advanced steel techniques, namely, producing advanced steels by using only simple alloying elements such as carbon, manganese, and silicon, and also by utilizing steel scrap. The hope is that this approach will lead to a technology of a so-called steel-to-steel recycling process, with the ultimate goal of a recycling process such as an automotive-steel-to-automotive-steel recycling process to take the place of the current cascade-type recycling system. The main idea is to utilize ultra-grain refining structures and hetero structures as well as martensite structures. In particular, the focus of this book is on tensile strength and toughness of advanced steels from both the fundamental and engineering points of view. Fundamentally, a unique approach to analysis is taken, based on fracture surface energy as effective grain size is employed to better understand the mechanism of property improvement. From the engineering point of view, in fracture toughness such factors as crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) of advanced steels are evaluated in comparison with those of conventional steels.
