This study aims to examine the relationship between pay and performance with special focus on the Malaysia Remuneration System (MRS). In the Malaysian Civil Service, the practices of performance pay was first introduced in 1991 under the implementation of the New Remuneration System (NRS). The system gave paramount emphasis in the aspect of performance, thus marked a paradigm shift in the Malaysian compensation practices. The MRS which was introduced in 2002 continued to weigh in the performance aspect as the main indicator in evaluating employees' achievement. Objective assessment of employees' performance has been developed through the implementation of Competency Level Assessment (CLA). It tries to build linkage between pay and performance, hence pay is believed to be a source of motivation. An attempt, therefore has been made to assess the degree of effectiveness of the MRS in strengthening the pay-performance link in the Malaysian government.

"Pay for performance" has become a buzzword for the 1990s, as U.S. organizations seek ways to boost employee productivity. The new emphasis on performance appraisal and merit pay calls for a thorough examination of their effectiveness. Pay for Performance is the best resource to date on the issues of whether these concepts work and how they can be applied most effectively in the workplace. This important book looks at performance appraisal and pay practices in the private sector and describes whetherâ€"and howâ€"private industry experience is relevant to federal pay reform. It focuses on the needs of the federal government, exploring how the federal pay system evolved; available evidence on federal employee attitudes toward their work, their pay, and their reputation with the public; and the complicating and pervasive factor of politics.

New industrial centres are emerging in the so-called BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, and China), where large numbers of plants have been constructed in recent years, creating many manufacturing jobs. But what does industrial work look like in these locations? Up until now, much of the interest in developing country industrialization has concentrated on the poor working conditions that characterize some export-oriented sectors in emerging economies, most notoriously in the garment industry. In contrast, the concern of this book is with the modern facilities of multinational or local manufacturers that reflect aspirations for a process of industrial upgrading that might foreshadow the future for these countries. The book provides an analysis of work, its context, and the situation of employees in plants in the BRICs focussing on three main questions: What differences and common features can be ascertained in a comparison both of countries and firms in terms of workplace HR management and production systems? What evidence is there for either a 'high road' or 'low road' developmental path in the BRICs? How are corporate standards implemented in these local contexts? The book addresses an academic audience as well as managers and trade unionists. For the former, it offers a systematic comparison of the four countries and the companies under study. For the latter, it offers a vivid account of challenges the companies face in the BRIC countries as well as the solutions adopted by the companies.

Performance related pay has become a major part of executive's remuneration package in the UK and other countries. The purpose of using performance related pay is to strengthen the link between pay and performance whilst enhancing accountability and transparency in the pay setting process. It is difficult to difficult to objectively judge company performance in reference to executive as company performance is achieved by the collective performance of the company's workforce at large. Furthermore, there exist no best practice on the performance measures that companies should use to determine the performance of the executives and the company. This study seeks to investigate the relationship between executive pay and company performance using a case study of nineteen FTSE 100 companies, between the periods 1996-2011. The study provides evidence that different performance measures have different effect on the pay for performance sensitivity. The study further argues that a restriction on the use of performance related elements would be a step to curbing excessive executive remuneration.
