Most stress is a normal part of daily life, and can be coped with adequately by the individual. Prolonged or more serious stress however may require professional help. A local GP can often provide this but in many cases will refer the client to a mental health worker or other health professional. Originally published in 1990, this title was written for each of these groups: as a practical handbook and guide for those professionals working in the field of mental health, but also written for the referring GP and those seeking help themselves. The authors integrate theoretical and academic material relating to anxiety and stress research with clinical experience. The book begins with a theoretical section offering a working model of stress, a guide to diagnostic classification, and alternative models of anxiety. This is followed by chapters on assessment, explaining the problem and treatment procedures to the client, teaching specific self-help skills, and changing stressful lifestyles. Advice is also given on running anxiety and stress management groups, and individual case studies are examined. The authors make extensive use of analogy and metaphor to ensure ready understanding and recall. They also include many useful inventories, questionnaires, charts and client handouts. Anxiety and Stress Management will be of use to all health professionals working with people who have anxiety and stress related problems, but will prove equally valuable for the clients themselves as a reference book and as a means of self-education and self-help.

Coping with anxiety via anxiety management can be effectively achieved if you understand what severe anxiety means and how it progresses. Anxiety disorders are labeled in various categories such as General Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), social phobias and panic attacks. Regardless of how anxiety is defined, short-term relief of anxiety symptoms, with the aid of proper anxiety management strategies, is entirely possible. More often than not, people tend to confuse between stress and anxiety. Stress is basically defined as a mental or emotional burden that you experience. In contrast to this, anxiety is described as uneasiness or nervousness in the presence of danger or over an anticipated situation. If you feel anxiety, you will become stressed out. Similarly, if you feel stressed out, you will feel anxiety. These two terms are often used interchangeably. While performing your daily tasks you may experience stress and anxiety. For instance, whenever you are in an argument with your friend, or sibling for that matter, you will experience stress and anxiety over what happened. Sometimes you may consider taking a walk, doing yoga, or watch television to take your mind off the situation. This may be your way of stress and anxiety management. Apart from these, there are few more tips and techniques that can be used to tackle both stress and anxiety. In order to begin with stress anxiety management, you should neutralize both your stress and anxiety, but how to achieve this? There are three major aspects that contribute to anxiety in our lives: Physical, Mental and Social.

This book owes its existence to an ideal, a burning frustration, and a trusted believer. The ideal was the sense that governed my feelings about systematic desensitization during my early introduction to its benefits. It is hard to put into words the initial doubts that pervaded me during my first attempt with desensitization with a seriously phobic client, as I re ligiously worked my way through the procedure: "Will this client really become relaxed? And then what-will the visualization actually occur? And then what-will the fear really vanish, just like that?" And oh, the feeling of discovery, and validation, when indeed the process worked, and worked well. Desensitization was everything it was claimed to be: systematic, clean, theoretically grounded, empirically tested, applicable as a behavioral technology regardless of one's own theoretical bias. And there were testable outcomes; concrete evidence for change. So I became invested and aimed at doing more with desensitization. My students and I raised some theoretical questions in order to open the doors for revising the desensitization to improve on its applications. We tested the rapidity with which desensitization could be accomplished, shortening the time by shortening the anxiety hierarchy. Along with others, we studied the question of group delivery, and reducing the total number of sessions, as well as examining the use of audiotaped delivery of services.
