India has two key social formations, the castes and the tribes. Both groups can be studied from the perspective of society (samaj) and culture (sanskriti). However, studies on castes largely deal with social structure and less on culture, while studies on tribes focus more on culture than on social structure. What has resulted from this bias is a general misunderstanding that tribes have a rich culture but lack social structure. This volume emerges out of an in-depth empirical study of the social structure of five Scheduled Tribes (STs) in Gujarat, western India, viz., Gamit, Vasava, Chaudhari, Kukana and Warli. It analyses and compares their internal social organisation consisting of institutions of household, family, lineage, clan, kinship rules and marriage networks. The book also deals with changes taking place in the social structure of contemporary tribal societies. While the focus is mainly on the data from tribes of western India, the issues are relevant to pan-Indian tribes. An important contribution to the studies on tribes of India, this book will be of great interest to students and researchers of anthropology, sociology, demography, history, tribal studies, social work, public policy and law. It will also be of interest to professionals working with NGOs and civil society, programme and policy formulating authorities and bureaucrats.

Kinship Alliance And Social Structure Of The Hill Madia Of Central India written by Ruth Manimekalai Vaz and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Maria (Indic people) categories.

My research begins with an investigation into the four god-groups structure of the Hill Madia, a central Indian aboriginal tribe, looks at the nature of their social groups and networks, and establishes that the god-groups and networks that were seen as agnatic kin groups by earlier analysts are actually cult-groups and religious communities. Pursuing the function the god-groups system serves in the life of this people, I find answers in the power structures that derive from and control the tribal religious belief system. Pursuing the rationale behind the four god-group structure, I find answers in the Madia kinship and alliance. The patrilateral cross-cousin (FZD) alliance rule effects a tetradic terminology and a tripartite kin classification. This alliance rule requires four exchange units, usually four clans, and the tetradic god-group structure is simply an actualization of a mental model for that marriage alliance that needs such a quadrilateral alliance partnership. But more than that, I have argued that it is the dual social organization made of jiva and ermi, roughly interpreted as 'brother' and 'brother-in-law' and the cultural ideal of finding an optimal balance between these two, which motivated the choice of the four god-group structure as the best option from a repertoire of other options that were available and chosen by other related tribes. An unexpected outcome of this study is that the Madia represents the proto-Dravidian kinship system. The fundamental characteristics of the Madia kinship make it a good candidate for representing proto-human kinship as well.
