Social Movements cleverly translates the art of collective action and mobilization by excluded groups to facilitate understanding social change from below. Students learn the core components of social movements, the theory and methods used to study them, and the conditions under which they can lead to political and social transformation. This fully class-tested book is the first to be organized along the lines of the major subfields of social movement scholarship—framing, movement emergence, recruitment, and outcomes—to provide comprehensive coverage in a single core text. Features include: use of real data collected in the U.S. and around the world the emphasis on student learning outcomes case studies that bring social movements to life examples of cultural repertoires used by movements (flyers, pamphlets, event data on activist websites, illustrations by activist musicians) to mobilize a group topics such as immigrant rights, transnational movement for climate justice, Women's Marches, Fight for $15, Occupy Wall Street, Gun Violence, Black Lives Matter, and the mobilization of popular movements in the global South on issues of authoritarian rule and neoliberalism With this book, students deepen their understanding of movement dynamics, methods of investigation, and dominant theoretical perspectives, all while being challenged to consider their own place in relation to social movements.

Founded in 1978, the goal of the Working Women's Forum is to improve living conditions of working women in India. Its struggle against poverty and insufficient social protection includes programs for women's health and welfare, and credits and cooperatives to enhance the economic participation of women. This organization has developed into a platform for empowerment, giving Indian women both voice and capacity to realize their economic and social goals. The Working Women's Forum has, for over a decade and a half, mobilized the poorest, and the most marginalized sector of the work force in India. Poor women workers face constraints and oppression by their barriers of caste, class, and gender that further marginalize their position both at home and at work place. Caste affiliation restricts their mobility and formulates cultural norms for their social behavior. Class membership limits their access to productive resources and makes them invisible in the economic spheres. The gender roles relegate women to a low productive occupation near the household, minimizing their economic role as only an extension of their domestic chores. In detailing the history and growth of the Working Women's Forum in India, Structuring a Movement and Spreading It On shows how women workers are undermined as workers, defined as housewives, and forced to a status of invisibility, living in subsistence and marginal survival conditions. Their vital contribution to the productive process and thereby the nation's economy is unrecognized. Therefore, the nation's planning process never makes the requisite allocations for the growth and development of this section. It is this segment of the work force that have beenorganized by the Working Women's Forum through credit cooperatives and collective spirit of unionism that has brought about a sea change in the lives of the poorest women. Today, thousands of women have been released from the clutches of perpetual indebtedness and dependency on moneylenders and other middlemen. Women have thus been able to save, create assets, and improve the quality of living, thus ensuring growth with equity.

Structure And Functions Of Contractile Proteins written by Boris F. Poglazov and has been published by Academic Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-28 with Science categories.

Structure and Functions of Contractile Proteins focuses on the analysis of problems on the structure and functions of contractile proteins in which substantial progress has been achieved. The book first offers information on the protein constitution of myofibrils and myosin, including adenosinetriphosphatase activity, reaction with actin, and myosin molecule. The text also ponders on the polymerization of actin, tropomyosin, and the theory of contraction. Discussions focus on model experiments and molecular basis of contraction; structural interrelations of muscle proteins; features of the process of polymerization of actin; and size of the actin molecule. The text elaborates on the contractile proteins of the elementary motor structures of cells, as well as the chemical composition and physicochemical and enzymic properties of flagella and cilia; achromatin apparatus and movement of chromosomes; and structure of the flagella and cilia. Motor apparatus of bacteriophage and features of the movement of protoplasm and the mechanism of permeability are also discussed. The manuscript is a reliable source of data for readers interested in the structure and functions of contractile proteins.

The Structure Of World History written by Kojin Karatani and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-03-28 with History categories.

In this major, paradigm-shifting work, Kojin Karatani systematically re-reads Marx's version of world history, shifting the focus of critique from modes of production to modes of exchange. Karatani seeks to understand both Capital-Nation-State, the interlocking system that is the dominant form of modern global society, and the possibilities for superseding it. In The Structure of World History, he traces different modes of exchange, including the pooling of resources that characterizes nomadic tribes, the gift exchange systems developed after the adoption of fixed-settlement agriculture, the exchange of obedience for protection that arises with the emergence of the state, the commodity exchanges that characterize capitalism, and, finally, a future mode of exchange based on the return of gift exchange, albeit modified for the contemporary moment. He argues that this final stage—marking the overcoming of capital, nation, and state—is best understood in light of Kant's writings on eternal peace. The Structure of World History is in many ways the capstone of Karatani's brilliant career, yet it also signals new directions in his thought.
