Die vorliegende Arbeit widmet sich dem Substandard, das heiat dem sprechsprachlichen Gesamtbereich unterhalb der normierten Standardsprache. Dieser wird am Beispiel der Kleinstadtregion Wittlich in der Eifel analysiert. Die Untersuchung geht multivariat vor, indem sie die areale, die soziale und die situativ-pragmatische Variationsdimension beruecksichtigt. Es wurden sowohl aobjektiveo Sprachdaten als auch asubjektiveo Einstellungsdaten erhoben, und beide Datenkomplexe werden qualitativen und quantitativ-statistischen Analysen unterzogen. Als zentrales Ergebnis kristallisiert sich eine Struktur des Substandards heraus, die mittels eines sprachdynamisch neugefassten Varietatenbegriffs beschrieben wird: Wahrend sich die variationslinguistische Diskussion bislang in der Aporie der Entscheidung zwischen einem Varietatenmodell oder einem Modell des variativen Kontinuums befand, bringt die Arbeit beide Ansatze erstmals zusammen. This volume presents 16 original studies of variation in languages representing the three main European language families, as well as in varieties of Greek and Hungarian. The studies concern variation in or across dialects or dialect groups, in standard varieties or in emerging regional varieties of the standard. Several studies investigate a specific linguistic element or structure, while others focus on areas of tension between variation and prescriptive standard norms, on regional standard varieties and regiolects, on problems of linguistic classification (from folk linguistic or dialect geographical perspectives) and the classification of speakers. Language acquisition plays a main role in three studies. The studies in this volume represent a range of methods, including ethnographic and 'interpretative' approaches, conversation analysis, analyses of the internal and geographical distribution of dialect features, the classification and quantitative analyses of socio-demographic speaker background data, quantitative analyses of both diachronic and synchronic language data, phonetic measurements, as well as (quasi-)experimental perception studies. In variational linguistics, the concept of space has always been a central issue. However, different research traditions considering space coexisted for a long time separately. Traditional dialectology focused primarily on the diatopic dimension of linguistic variation, whereas in sociolinguistic studies diastratic and diaphasic dimensions were considered. For a long time only very few linguistic investigations tried to combine both research traditions in a two-dimensional design – a desideratum which is meant to be compensated by the contributions of this volume. The articles present findings from empirical studies which take on these different concepts and examine how they relate to one another. Besides dialectological and sociolinguistic concepts also a lay perspective of linguistic space is considered, a paradigm that is often referred to as “folk dialectology”. Many of the studies in this volume make use of new computational possibilities of processing and cartographically representing large corpora of linguistic data. The empirical studies incorporate findings from different linguistic communities in Europe and pursue the objective to shed light on the inter-relationship between the different concepts of space and their relevance to variational linguistics.
