This official guide to the site of Samothrace and the Sanctuary of the Great Gods appears now as revised by longtime director of excavations James R. McCredie. Two initial chapters helpfully provide background information on the history of Samothrace and the religion of the Great Gods. Following this are two tours. The first takes the reader through the sanctuary itself, home to cryptic mysteries where a variety of gods were worshiped, including the Great Mother, Hades, and Persephone; there are numerous plans and drawings of the monumental structures, such as the Rotunda of Arsinoe and the Propylon of Ptolemy II, allowing the reader to visualize what the sanctuary would have looked like when it was still an active religious center. The second tour takes the reader through the museum and highlights the most important pieces in the collection, including a large statue of a winged Victory and gold ornaments from a Hellenistic tomb. The guide also includes a description of excavations on Samothrace outside of the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, as well as bibliography for further reading.

"One of the most neglected areas of medieval Islamic history has been the development of the city. This collection, The Islamic City, containing twelve papers presented at the Meeting of the Near Eastern History Group p at Oxford in 1965, fills a notable void. It examines varied aspects of the major cities located in Persia, Iraq, Syria, and Egypt and, in one section, even compares them with their Chinese counterparts. Furthermore, several of the eminent scholars participating in this panel expertly synthesized much of the earlier disparate research on urban Islam." -- Renaissance Quarterly , Autumn, 1973, Vol. 26, No. 3 (Autumn, 1973), pp. 303-307.

Sardis From Prehistoric To Roman Times written by Archaeological Exploration of Sardis (Program) and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1983 with History categories.

A great metropolis of the ancient world, "golden" Sardis was the place where legendary Croesus ruled, where coinage was invented. Since 1958 an archaeological team has been working at the site to retrieve evidence of the rich Lydian culture as well as of the prehistoric Anatolian settlement and the Hellenistic and Roman civilizations that followed the Lydian kingdom. Here is a comprehensive and fully illustrated account of what the team has learned, presented by the eminent archaeologist who led the expedition. George Hanfmann and his collaborators survey the environment of Sardis, the crops and animal life, the mineral resources, the industries for which the city was famed, and the pattern of settlement. The history of Sardis is then reconstructed, from the early Bronze Age to Late Antiquity. Archaeologists who have done the excavating contribute descriptions of shops and houses, graves, the precinct and Altar of Artemis, the Acropolis, gold-working installations and techniques, the bath and gymnasium complex, and the Synagogue. The material finds are studied in the context of other evidence, and there emerges an overall picture of the Lydian society, culture, and religion, the Greek and subsequently the Roman impact, the Jewish community, and the Christianization of Sardis. Historians of the ancient world will find this account invaluable.
