Questo volume sugli stucchi raccoglie gli interventi presentati durante la giornata di studi organizzata dall’Istituto Materiali e Costruzioni (IMC) del Dipartimento Ambiente Costruzioni e Design (DACD) della SUPSI di Lugano nell’ottobre del 2018, all’interno del progetto “The Art and Industry of the Ticinese Stuccatori from the 16th to the 17th Century” finanziato dal Fondo Nazionale Svizzero per la Ricerca Scientifica. L’incontro ha voluto offrire l’occasione per mettere a confronto voci spesso lontane: quella dei conservatori–restauratori, degli storici dell’arte, degli esperti scientifici e degli architetti, presentando le attività rivolte alla conoscenza e alla conservazione degli stucchi attualmente in corso in Canton Ticino e aprendo importanti confronti con il Veneto, Genova, Roma, Torino. Questi sono centri di grande rilevanza per lo sviluppo di una decorazione tridimensionale a cui hanno attivamente contribuito gli stuccatori provenienti dalla Regione dei Laghi e in cui molto si sta facendo per la conoscenza, la conservazione e la valorizzazione di queste testimonianze. Dall’insieme dei testi, emerge come, nell’ambito degli stucchi, vi siano alcuni temi che attraversano trasversalmente le principali questioni conservative quali quello dei trattamenti consolidanti in presenza di sali magnesiaci e dei sistemi di descialbo o di pulitura. Le comunicazioni di carattere storico-artistico hanno invece illustrato le modalità con cui questi artisti si muovevano fra le varie committenze e di come la forza dei rapporti di parentela e i legami con la terra di origine rappresentassero l’elemento “collante” che ha consentito loro una capillare penetrazione nei diversi ambienti sociali e artistici. L’intento di questo volume è di iniziare a costruire un percorso comune fra coloro che a vario titolo si stanno occupando delle decorazioni a stucco che possa contribuire al progredire delle conoscenze e allo sviluppo professionale. Dal 2019 è in servizio presso la SABAP di Firenze. Giacinta Jean Architetto, responsabile del corso di laurea in conservazione e restauro e professore alla SUPSI di Lugano. Coordina le attività didattiche, i cantieri di restauro e segue progetti di ricerca prevalentemente su architetture del XX secolo, storia e tecnica delle decorazioni a stucco, conservazione preventiva e manutenzione. Refinement and enrichment of surfaces in stone, wood and plaster is a fundamental aspect of early modern architecture which has been marginalised by architectural history. Enriching Architecture aims to retrieve and rehabilitate surface achievement as a vital element of early modern buildings in Britain and Ireland. Rejected by modernism, demeaned by the conceptual ‘turn’ and too often reduced to its representative or social functions, we argue for the historical legitimacy of creative craft skill as a primary agent in architectural production. However, in contrast to the connoisseurial and developmental perspectives of the past, this book is concerned with how surfaces were designed, achieved and experienced. The contributors draw upon the major rethinking of craft and materials within the wider cultural sphere in recent years to deconstruct traditional, oppositional ways of thinking about architectural production. This is not a craft for craft’s sake argument but an effort to embed the tangible findings of conservation and curatorial research within an evidence-led architectural history that illuminates the processes of early modern craftsmanship. The book explores broad themes of surface treatment such as wainscot, rustication, plasterwork, and staircase embellishment together with chapters focused on virtuoso buildings and set pieces which illuminate these themes.
