The focus on the achievement gap for minority students is an issue facing many school districts across the county. The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation highlighted the fact that many minority students are not achieving at or above expected levels in classrooms across America. Teacher quality is found to be an important ingredient of a thriving school. This reflects the NCLB requirement that all schools employ effective and highly qualified teachers. However, teachers cannot be evaluated merely on their credentials, such as attaining graduate degrees or the number of years of teaching experience. Furthermore, politicians, teachers, and economists have proved unsuccessful in eradicating this dilemma of developing successful teaching practices in the classroom. The students themselves may be instrumental in providing valuable information as to what constitutes an effective teacher. Students are seldom interviewed to determine and define what characteristics are vital for an effective educator. The purpose of this study was to identify educational practices and teacher traits that sixth grade students in a diverse suburban school district find successful. Case study methodology was employed for this research. The students were interviewed utilizing semi-structured interview questions. These tools were used to determine the perceptions of exemplary teaching from the perspective of sixth grade at-risk and non at-risk students. By utilizing data from the interviews, participant's drawings, and teacher observations, themes emerged and were analyzed through a constructivist framework. Hands on learning, technology, differentiation, humor, and nurturing teachers were the findings that suggest that schools need to ensure teachers are employing these strategies in their classrooms. The research also suggests that the perceptions of the students themselves must be considered when attempting to improve education and when providing insight to politicians, administrators, and educators.

Regardless of increased standards created by policymakers, urban schools which serve higher populations of diverse and / or at risk students have continued to achieve at lower levels than national norms. The purpose of this study was to solicit the wisdom of exemplary teachers, recognized for their success in urban settings, to assess their perceptions of what teachers should know and do in order to positively impact student achievement within urban schools. The fundamental questions which guided this study were: 1.) What do exemplary teachers perceive teachers should know and be able to do in order to provide instruction in urban elementary classrooms? And, 2.) What curricula and practices do exemplary teachers perceive teacher preparation programs should employ in order to prepare teachers for service in urban elementary classrooms? Ten exemplary teachers, identified as recipients of prestigious teaching awards, were interviewed for the study. According to the findings, factors that are widely known to be important for good teaching are absolutely critical for effective urban teaching. Successful urban teachers are competent in the content they teach and utilize current educational literature, especially research relating to diversity in culture and learning theory, to improve their practice. Because urban children are more diverse in their ethnicity, race, wealth, life experiences, and other learning needs, urban teachers must be able to assess their students and differentiate instruction accordingly. Successful urban teachers possess extraordinary managerial skills because they do not solely rely on direct instruction; they have articulate procedures and routines in place so students can be working on different engaging tasks at the same time. Successful urban teachers have the ability to seek support systems for themselves and their students. They collaborate with colleagues and ascertain community resources to form a network of support, consistency, and safety

The level of excellence in college and university teaching is now a worldwide concern. Universities are paying increased attention to the quality of the pedagogy practiced in classrooms and assessing how effectively professors are teaching (Ovando, 1989). The researcher used a descriptive survey that explores and describes student perceptions of effective teaching in the classroom. The questionnaire consisted of items which were designed to assess Darling-Hammond's Teaching Behaviors for Powerful Learning (2008). The subjects were asked to rate the items on the level of importance the teaching behavior has on their learning and the frequency that they encountered the teaching behaviors. Major findings of this study included that students confirmed that all the teaching behaviors purported by Darling-Hammond are important to their learning process. Provides clear standards and constant feedback and Scaffold the learning process were deemed as the most important teaching behaviors as perceived by the respondents and are taking place in the classes where they are learning a lot. They also responded that encouraging strategic and metacognitive thinking is important but they perceive it is not being demonstrated to the extent of the other teaching behaviors in the classroom. It is recommended that educators continue to demonstrate the teaching behaviors for powerful learning. Educators should also be aware if the teaching behaviors need to be more explicitly demonstrated. To facilitate this, it may be beneficial to provide instructors with tangible examples and the opportunity to practice these effective teaching behaviors with others.
