Excerpt from Composers' Counterpoint: A Sequel to "Students' Counterpoint" As an educational process, this further poly phonic study may be best described as a legitimate and logical development or extension of that stricter method of part-writing which has been termed with equal convenience Students' Counterpoint. In the academical career of a modern musician, the time allowed for the study of Com posers' Counterpoint should properly occupy an intermediate position between the probationary period devoted to a necessary observance of the strict discipline of Students' Counterpoint, and that more congenial after-season, when (under the direction of his teacher) the student is called upon to put into practice his knowledge of polyphonic principles by attempting the construction of entire movements in Fugal, Symphonic, and other forms.viii preface. Excerpt from Student's Counterpoint Proposition 1. Tyrants deserve death. Proposition Caesar was a tyrant. Conclusion. - Therefore, Caesar deserved death. Every conclusion is thus seen to be deduced from two prepositions (thence called premises), and an argument or discourse, thus stated regularly, and at full length - as above - is called a syllogism. Frequently, for the sake of brevity, one of the premises may be suppressed; but it is always understood. On the other hand, the terms may be amplified, modified, converted, &c.; but the process of argumentation (however elaborately expressed) ought to be capable of being reduced to this simple syllogistic formula. Excerpt from The Rules of Counterpoint: Systematically Arranged for the Use of Young Students We trust our readers will think seriously of this, and not imagine that any amount of time they give to the study of Counterpoint can possibly be thrown away. It cannot have been by virtue of a mere meaningless coincidence, that Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, first worked so hard at the self-same exercises, and afterwards produced all their wonderful works. We do not, of course, mean to imply that they were indebted, for their Genius, to the Learning they took so much pains to acquire but, we do say, that, without that Learning, their Genius would not have had fair play. And, because no man can ascertain whether he possesses true Genius or not. While he remains in ignorance of the First Principles of Art, w.1 counsel our readers to study these First Principles as diligently as Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven studied them, in the days of their tutelage. Excerpt from Counterpoint Although, following the usual custom the whole note has been chosen as the notation for the canti fermi in all the examples illustrating this work, it is of course open to the student to use a note of any length. The notes employed in the second and third species of counterpoint (usually half notes and quar ter notes) will be regulated by the character of the note employed in the canto fermo, being respectively two and four notes to one. The notation of the fourth species is similar to the second, but syncopated. Counterpoint. Notes were formerly termed points. Adding a counterpoint signifies the setting one point or note against another. Counterpoint is of two kinds, simple and double. The latter of these terms, in its ordinary acceptation, comprises con vertible counterpoints in three, four, or more parts triple, quadruple, Simple counterpoint includes five species or orders, z'.e. Five methods of adding a counterpoint to a canto fermo. The term florid counterpoint is generally applied to the fifth Species. Excerpt from Applied Strict Counterpoint So many pupils have acknowledged to me the advantages that have accrued to them from having understood and practised the application of Strict Counterpoint in composition in the strict style, that it seemed to me a short treatise on the subject might be serviceable. Very few teachers encourage the study of Strict Counterpoint in anything but its purely technical and analytical aspects. It is certain that very few students understand the function of the semibreve Canto F ermo. Still fewer realize that it can be eliminated, and that the application of the technique of Strict Counterpoint without this constant factor results in composition in the style of the Polyphonic Period. Excerpt from Modern Academic Counterpoint The present book goes forth in as perfect a form as, at this present time the writer can achieve but his own long experience as a teacher leads him to conceive the possibility of still further improvements in the method of presenting to the student-mind what has always been an educational process of great difficulty and elaboration. Excerpt from Manual of Simple, Double, Triple and Quadruple Counterpoint The subsequent Manual contains instructions for the study of simple, double, triple and quadruple Counterpoint. All the rules, principles and remarks set forth in this volume, are founded on the contrapuntal works of Bach, Handel, and other classical masters, who have written in our system of the major and minor keys. These studies in Counterpoint are intended to prepare the student for the composition of Canon and Fugue; but those also, who do not intend to become musicians by profession, will be enabled to penetrate more deeply into the works of the classical masters and to cope with the difficulties of their sublime creations. Let no one imagine, however, that the knowledge of the rules alone would suffice; these would be attained quickly and with little trouble. Only serious, conscientious study can further the pupil here, as well as in all other branches of art. Only when the student has mastered all the problems contained in this book in a thorough manner, will he be enabled to proceed to the study of Canon and Fugue.
