"Essentials in Ophthalmology" is a new review series covering all of ophthalmology categorized in eight subspecialties. It will be published quarterly, thus each subspecialty will be reviewed biannually. Given the multiplicity of medical publications already available, why is a new series needed? Consider that the half-life of medical knowledge is estimated to be around 5 years. Moreover, it can be as long as 8 years between the first description of a medical innovation in a peer-reviewed scientific journal and publication in a medical textbook. A series that narrows this time span between journal and textbook would provide a more rapid and efficient transfer of medical knowledge into clinical practice, and enhance care of our patients.

Retinal vessels have embryological, anatomical and physiological similarities with coronary and cerebral vessels and many systemic vascular pathologies, such as hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease affect the retinal vessels from function to structure. In addition, ocular disorders that constitute major public health problems, either directly involve retinal and/or choroidal vessels such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, or have vascular factors as risk factors such as myopia or glaucoma. Understanding the vascular processes that occur in these diseases could advance our understanding of visual compromise associated with these disorders and, possibly, their prevention. Moreover, using the eye as a window to the vascular health of the human body is also of major interest. As such, many efforts are made to develop technologies that are able to assess, in a non-invasive way, the functional and structural changes of retinal and choroidal vessels and provide biomarkers of ocular and systemic vascular diseases. These technologies could be used to assess not only the individual risk for development and progression of vascular disease at both the systemic and ocular level, but also the efficacy of various interventions, from prevention and medical treatments to surgical and laser procedures.

In memory of J. Wayne Streilein, the pioneer in ocular immunology The second edition of Immune Response and the Eye' highlights recent insights into the dangerous compromise' between the immune system and the eye, which protects the eye against pathogens while limiting inflammation and immune-mediated injury to ocular tissues with little or no regenerative potential. It discusses the broad spectrum of physiological, immunological, anatomical, and biochemical adaptations that conspire to closely regulate the tone and tenor of immune responses in the eye. This volume further describes immune-mediated diseases that occur when the compromise between the immune system and the eye is breached. This breakdown in immune privilege threatens the vision of millions each year. Finally, recent advances in ocular immunology are presented, which offer potential therapeutic applications in corneal and retinal transplantation and in the management of blinding autoimmune diseases of the eye. Eye researchers, ophthalmologists and immunologists will appreciate the state-of-the-art and authoritative information presented in Immune Response and the Eye'
