Cultural Populism written by Jim McGuigan and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-11-01 with Social Science categories.

First Published in 2004. This book provides a novel understanding of current thought and enquiry in the study of popular culture and communications media. The populist sentiments and impulses underlying cultural studies and its postmodernist variants are explored and criticized sympathetically. An exclusively consumptionist trend of analysis is identified and shown to be an unsatisfactory means of accounting for the complex material conditions and mediations that shape ordinary people’s pleasures and opportunities for personal and political expression. Through detailed consideration of the work of Raymond Williams, Stuart Hall and ‘the Birmingham School’, John Fiske, youth subcultural analysis, popular television study, and issues generally concerned with public communication (including advertising, arts and broadcasting policies, children’s television, tabloid journalism, feminism and pornography, the Rushdie affair, and the collapse of communism), Jim McGuigan sets out a distinctive case for recovering critical analysis of popular culture in a rapidly changing, conflict-ridden world. The book is an accessible introduction to past and present debates for undergraduate students, and it poses some challenging theses for postgraduate students, researchers and lecturers.

During the sweltering summer of 1957 in Gdansk, three boys and a girl fall under the spell of a mysterious classmate, David Weiser. A thin Jewish boy of few words, Weiser can hypnotize panthers, shoot a bullet through a Hitler stamp at a hundred meters, and even levitate. After staging a spectacular explosion with a hidden cache of old German munitions, Weiser and the girl, Elka, vanish without a trace, leaving the three other boys, including Pawel Heller - the novel's narrator - to explain his disappearance to the authorities. But the boys won't talk. What happened to David Weiser? And who was he - a demon, a prophet, or just a boy? Heller's quest for the answers to these questions makes for a beguiling and haunting tale.

Environmental Aesthetics written by Jack L. Nasar and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992-07-31 with Psychology categories.

How do people react to the visual character of their surroundings? What can planners do to improve the aesthetic quality of these surroundings? Too often in environmental design, visual quality--aesthetics--is misunderstood as only a minor concern, dependent on volatile taste and thus undefinable. Yet a substantial body of research indicates the importance of visual quality in the environment to the public and has uncovered systematic patterns of human response to visual attributes of the built environment. Efforts to understand environmental aesthetics have been undertaken by investigators from such diverse fields as landscape architecture, environmental psychology, geography, philosophy, architecture, and city planning. As a result the relevant information is scattered and not readily available to professionals and policy makers. The book brings together classic and new contributions by distinguished workers in different disciplines. It explores theory and data on preferences in the visual environment, and also addresses the practical application of aesthetic criteria in design, planning and public policy. Promising directions for future research are identified.
