Wie Musik in Mittelalter und Humanismus gelehrt wurde, zeigen viele edierte Quellentexte. Doch nur selten spiegeln sie die Lehre derart auf lebensnahe „Alltagspraxis“ zugeschnitten wider und dazu historisch so genau bestimmbar wie in den hier erstmals vorgelegten 11 anonymen Texten, die der spätere Zwickauer Stadtschreiber, Ratsherr und Humanist Stephan Roth in seinen Lateinschul- und Leipziger Universitätsjahren (ca. 1507–1517) benutzte, meist selbst kopierte, sammelte und sorgsam verwahrte. Der Band führt in Roths Wirken sowie in sein Textkonvolut ein, skizziert dann den damaligen Stand landläufiger Lehre von Choral- und Mensuralmusik, und bietet, als Hauptteil, eine Gesamtedition dieser bisher singulären Texte. Sie zeigen, wie vielfältig die Lehre im Schulbereich kursierte, wie intensiv sie aufgegriffen, wie gründlich sie erarbeitet (auch kommentiert) wurde. So bereichert der edierte Textfundus die Kenntnis musikalischer Lehrtraditionen und eröffnet künftigen Forschungen neue Aspekte.
